The perfect look for my FI Project will have my audience grasp what ASMR is, and have them introduced to the community and hopefully instill curiosity to them so hopefully they can explore it further. I want to have the paper in one page of my media, then have links to bring my audience to different facets of the community. ASMR is all about catering to the desires of the viewers and that is what I would like my project to become.
I wanted to focus in media (gifs, excerpts from video) that can compare and contrast the past community to the present community. This project will be extremely subjective of my opinions so I will try to be as open as possible.
My research question I would like to explore is the growing dominance of the male gaze in the ASMR community and how this may effect the community in the long run. “The male gaze is a concept coined by feminist film critic Laura Mulvey. It refers to the way visual arts are structured around a masculine viewer. It describes the tendency in visual culture to depict the world and women from a masculine point of view and in terms of men’s attitudes.” -Wikipedia.
A couple years ago, the ASMR community was fairly unknown by the majority, it was a very personal community for many people, and the main focus was to help aid viewers to relax. Now due to its growing popularity many videos tend to cater to the growing population for more “likes” and “subscriptions”, detracting from the special quality of the community.
My focus is on ASMR looking at it from the disciplinary of gender studies. Like I pointed out from another blog post, the ASMR community has been dominated by female ASMR artists, but steadily has been changing and more male ASMR artists have been sprouting. In the past couple of years, ASMR has become pretty well known and now many people are coming into the ASMR community. The inclusion of more people has led to an increase of trolls, whereas in the past, these trolls could be moderated much more effectively and quickly. For me, I believe that this can lead to a chain reaction of troll behavior in the ASMR community. I’m focusing directly on the ‘male gaze’ and rude and pervasive comments being left to the ASMR videos, shifting the focus from a therapeutic, and legitimate community to something pervasive and hyper sexualized.
While most saw the computer as a tool for engineers or, at most, businesspeople, Kay thought computers could be used even by children, and could be used creatively. Kay and Goldberg also upset the idea that time-sharing computing is liberating for users, as J. C. R. Licklider (◊05) had more appropriately thought during the batch computing era. Instead, they believed that in the mid-1970s providing powerful, dedicated computers to individuals was a superior approach.
This nugget summarized Kay & Goldbergs’ approach to personal computer; they believed that these devices should be accessible to everyone, and not only limited to engineers or other similar people in that class. By wanting to expand the availability of the PC to everyone, this current society can thank them for how society is today.
The benefits of having everyone have the ability to access personal computers is a united wealth of information, constantly being streamed into the vast network we presently call the internet. This space stores unlimited source of data which anyone can access with minor struggle.
I wanted to “beautify” my blog simply adding a humorous heading on my page. I decided on a picture of a squirrel with it’s jaws gaping wide open. I think this picture is pretty symbolic of the students taking UNIV in the regards that we are all squirrels climbing trees and jumping from one branch to the next (think of conceptual spaces and permalinks), the gaping mouth indicates a thirst for knowledge! Let’s squirrel away #thoughtvectors
This blog’s objective is to create a conceptual network. This network features different doors and channels to different bloggers via permalinks. This flow of two sentences from different blog posts will ultimately connect with each other and create a larger picture which will display the progress to our final inquiry project. I believe this space will look like a patchwork with all of our peers work hyperlinked.
I want to bring the attention to social activism through social media applications like Twitter. The internet is a space where people can share similar ideas and organize.Twitter Activism
Watching ASMR videos, I noticed a trend of more female ASMR content then male uploaded content, whereas, the viewing population was more balanced. I then wondered how the ASMR community was reflective of the patriarchal, hetero normative society. Feminism within ASMR
“Man’s population and gross product are increasing at a considerable rate, but the complexity of his problems grows still faster, and the urgency with which solutions must be found becomes steadily greater in response to the increased rate of activity and the increasingly global nature of that activity. Augmenting man’s intellect, in the sense defined above, would warrant full pursuit by an enlightened society if there could be shown a reasonable approach and some plausible benefits.”
Engelbart’s reading was maybe too much for me to handle, but I think I got this gist of it. The nugget I chose describes the state of exponential growth of technology along with the growth of mankind. Mankind will always face troubles, but according to Engelbart and my opinion, technology can ease those troubles. I want to bring the attention to social activism through social media applications like Twitter. The internet is a space where people can share similar ideas and organize. This is extremely impacting and revolutionary when done right. I believe Engelbart was speaking in a more general sense, but I immediately thought about different spaces of the internet that benefits humankind.
I had to re-read Englebart’s work to try and understand the material better. Similarly to my peer, going back to his work helped me understand his work more. Engelbart viewed that in order to make the world better, people required to work together collectively and be organized. People needed to collectively harness human intellect, and thus believed that the computer would be the perfect tool for that.
I noticed that my fellow peers derived their questions from prior interest to their specific space of research on the internet. One example of this is from Luong interest in watching random clips on the internet with his brother, which developed into his current research question which is how his interest in why watching others in uncomfortable situations make for funny/viral videos on the internet.
I started off with the obvious (for me at least), “ASMR videos are relaxing”. Then according to directions, I formatted the statement into a question, “Are ASMR videos relaxing?” The answer to that was a simple yes, so I went further and asked questions like, “What is ASMR, and how does ASMR videos bring relaxation to viewers.” “Why is there a larger female than male ASMR uploaders on YouTube and how does that relate to society?” “How does feminism, relate to ASMR” ?
