About me

My name is Hector Ruiz and I am from West Point, VA. I am currently a sophomore at VCU. I started here at VCU as an undeclared major, but am now looking at Accounting as a major for now. I have always been good with organization of numbers and math so I am looking to do something around that area.  I enjoy watching and playing sports, with soccer being my favorite one, Hala Madrid! I also enjoy hanging out with friends.

About me

Ted Nelson at Mid-term

“At the last, it is to rescue the student from the inhuman teacher, and allow him to relate directly and personally to the intrinsically interesting subject matter, than we need to use computers in education.”

I found this quote interesting because I can relate to it. Many students including myself have had professors that are not easy to understand. In most cases it is because the professor is teaching in a way that we can’t comprehend or just simply find it boring the way they teach the class. I just think that with the use of computer and online classes you have the ability to learn your own way and where everything is instructed and written online. I believe that with computers and the internet and students making use of it to learn what they are assigned makes it more beneficial. I like how this class is organized and taught. All of the activities in this class help us learn and better understand everything we need to know.

I am studying about the possibility of having an immigration reform in the United States that would benefit immigrants that are currently here undocumented because i’d like to know why the United States government decides its best not to pass this reform, why the we need it, and how this immigration reform can benefit the United States and actual immigrants in order to help my readers question the opposition there is to this reform

Research Question: Why is it better to have an immigration reform?

This article explains why the United States needs an immigration reform. It explains and answers many question about how not having a reform is harmful and how it is unfair to immigrants. The way immigrants who come here to live a better life are treated is very unfair.  The other article contains  reasons people are against it and why its not better to have a reform but with counterarguments to those statements. Reasons to not have the reform in that article include, it could increase crime rate, american workers would lose jobs to immigrants, and that would it would change the nations identity.

What are your views on this immigration topic?

Why should we give easier access citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

Is it fair to have people in immigration detention suffer from being away from their family members?

Isn’t it unfair to automatically say that crime rates would increase by legalizing undocumented immigrants as if they are the only responsible ones for crimes committed in the U.S?

IP Project Blog Post

The Collaborative Interest Inventory assignment was a very useful way to decide on a topic. It was impressive seeing all the topics everybody was able to come up with.  As I was looking through the document and all of its ideas, the main topic that I was most interested in was about all the controversies we are facing. They were all great controversies to research but the one that brings the greatest attention to me is my own; which is about Donald Trump and his immigration views and his opinion on immigrants.  He wants  every immigrant and i mean every single one that is in the United States illegally to be sent back to their country. This is referring more to people from Mexico and he has also made some racial remarks about them calling all of them rapists and murderers.  All of this leads to the topic I would like to do which is about an immigration reform. Over the past years an immigration reform where a possible policy to increase legal immigration has been trying to be passed but has not been successful. The reason I want to do this topic is why not pass this reform? This topic intrigues and interacts with my real life because I myself have parents that are immigrants and family members that this reform could benefit them.    Donald trump as well as other people want to enforce an even stronger border or not support an immigration reform and they have their reasons for it, but I also have reasons as to why do the opposite. I would like to also find the better way to make this reform possible.

Concept Experience 5

As I was reading this blog my mind was thinking of how much the society I live in has changed compared to the one my parents lived in.Instead of people meeting up to talk and such, the use of texting even if you are a couple feet away is more common.  It is amazing the amount of apps there are today that people use to communicate and interact with. As technology continues to progress, society could potentially begin to spiral down to a negative outcome.

How does it feel when i think?  For me thinking usually leads to me having anxiety at the moment when I start thinking every thing that I have to turn in, when I have to be at work, when I have to pay a certain bill and if I will even have enough money and so on, but there are rings that hop me relax and make it easier for me to think like music for example or going on a run .  For my thoughts to become a reality, it goes through several challenging obstacles. It is an automatic reaction that shapes my perception and drives my emotion.

To me it really amazes how much clearer photographs taken by the cameras we have today including cameras we have on our phones keep getting clearer and clearer.Advances in technology have allowed us to do things such as changing the color filters after the photo has been taken. Faster material and lenses, more automatic cameras, finer-grained sensitive compounds to allow an extension of the minicamera idea, are all imminent.

Weather you’re good or bad at math we always at some point get that one problem we can’t solve no matter how much you look at the notes you took in class or how much you look through your book to see if you find the reason you’re not getting the right answer. However, many problems that can be though through in advance are very difficult to think through in advance. When we are given any sort of problem we have to solve,  we humans will always prefer to use and find the simplest method so that whenever we encounter a similar problem, it’ll be much easier. Present-day computers are designed primarily to solve pre formulated problems or to process data according to predetermined procedures. It will simulate the mechanisms and models, carry out the procedures, and display the results to the operator.  We humans have the ability and skills to find a way to resolve complex situations without the use of machines.
Our culture has evolved means for us to organize the little things we can do with our basic capabilities so that we can derive comprehension from truly complex situations, and accomplish the processes of deriving and implementing problem solutions.  Although the size of the step a human being can take in comprehension, innovation, or execution is small in comparison to the over-all size of the step needed to solve a complex problem, human beings nevertheless do solve complex problems.

We both start off with social or digital media and then we searched and chose our links by clicking on what we had the most interest in.I have a tendency to use Twitter and Instagram as well to see what friends are up to and also post a picture of something interesting Im doing but not to often.  Just like on twitter, you can follow friends and acquaintances on Instagram, and you can comment on other people’s photos.

Throughout  my research I came up with a variety of questions like, Which countries had soccer as there most popular sport, How many total leagues there are all around the world and when was soccer invented?I think its great that I had FIFA as my last link because it is the association of every soccer league in the world and soccer is my favorite sport to watch and play.  It didn’t exactly give me results to why soccer is actually a sport, but it did lead me to a different question that had a connection to my obvious statement and gave me many different articles that gave reasons to why soccer is better than any other sport and also why its the worst sport. I can conclude that the computer was in charge because without it, it wouldn’t of given me the hundreds of links to choose from, my only task was to choose what I enjoy.

Not only are they similar because they chose topics that interests them; they both ended with topics that deal with the career or future they plan to work with. The difficulty seems to be, not so much that we publish unduly in view of the extent and variety of present day interests, but rather that publication has been extended far beyond our present ability to make real use of the record.

Augmenting Human Intellect

“Our culture has evolved means for us to organize the little things we can do with our basic capabilities so that we can derive comprehension from truly complex situations, and accomplish the processes of deriving and implementing problem solutions”

As I was reading the passage Augmenting Human Intellect: Conceptual Framework, I found this paragraph pretty interesting. I chose this as my nugget because I believe that humans and machines or computers  are similar in the way of thinking except the fact that a machine will do it way faster than a human, of course, but we humans are similar to machines when it comes to problem solving any sort of question in the fact that it gets done the easiest way possible. When we are given any sort of problem we have to solve,  we humans will always prefer to use and find the simplest method so that whenever we encounter a similar problem, it’ll be much easier. Although, I  do believe that it affects humans that have to rely on machines to get a problem done. We humans have the ability and skills to find a way to resolve complex situations without the use of machines. Humans can be just as smart as computers and any type of machine.

Analyzing the obvious

Soccer is  a sport.

When i searched the question, Why is soccer a sport? It didn’t exactly give me results to why soccer is actually a sport, but it did lead me to a different question that had a connection to my obvious statement and gave me many different articles that gave reasons to why soccer is better than any other sport and also why its the worst sport.  I clicked on the first article that was called 10 reasons why soccer is better than any other sport and it included reasons like popularity, easy to learn, global reach and because its an olympic sport. All of those different reasons had already helped me to come up with other questions on my topic. Throughout  my research I came up with a variety of questions like, Which countries had soccer as there most popular sport, How many total leagues there are all around the world and when was soccer invented?

This assignment made me realize how much different information the internet and computer can give you on a simple topic. As you read and find the answers to a question you automatically find  new and different information that leads you to many other questions.

“However, many problems that can be though through in advance are very difficult to think through in advance. They would be easier to solve, and they could be solved faster through an intuitively guided trial-and- error procedure in which the computer cooperated,turn- ing up flaws in the reasoning or revealing unexpected turns  in the solution.”

I used this quote because it made me think of math. Weather you’re good or bad at math we always at some point get that one problem we can’t solve no matter how much you look at the notes you took in class or how much you look through your book to see if you find the reason you’re not getting the right answer. On the internet there is this site called Mathway, which is a math problem solving site that helps you get the answer to that math problem you are having much trouble with. Even though you have to pay to get the feature where it shows you and lists the steps on how to solve the problem, I find it very useful because it not only helps you understand your math problem and such but it also helps you to see where you made a mistake or find another way that will make it easier to solve your math problems as well as others related to that same problem.

Concept Experience 3

After looking through and reading everyone’s blog post on Associative Trails, I found that my post was similar to Insight,Opinions,Me…. We both start off with social or digital media and then we searched and chose our links by clicking on what we had the most interest in. For example after starting off with digital media she clicked on different interest like Avatar, Trojan War, and Helen of Troy.  She has a passion for history which is what determined the links she chose. Its similar to mine because even though I started off with social media, I clicked on things like Apple Inc, Ford Motor Company, trucks, and then several topics relating to sports because even though I do enjoy social media and things relating to technology, I also have a passion for sports.

I found similarities in kdurante and hosna’s posts because they both also start off with digital and social media. Not only are they similar because they chose topics that interests them; they both ended with topics that deal with the career or future they plan to work with. kdurante ended with dentistry and she plans to do something in that field. Hosna plans to join the Peace Corps, and as stated in her post the topics she chose like FDC and refugees have something to do with what she plans to do in the future.

It’s pretty interesting that I went from social media to a pickup truck and ended up with a sport. The way I chose the links was by clicking on things that I have interest in. All of the 10 links have to do with me and what I enjoy.  I think its great that I had FIFA as my last link because it is the association of every soccer league in the world and soccer is my favorite sport to watch and play.  I can conclude that the computer was in charge because without it, it wouldn’t of given me the hundreds of links to choose from, my only task was to choose what I enjoy.
