Augmenting Human Intellect Response

learning-priorities-Development

“By “augmenting human intellect” we mean increasing the capability of a man to approach a complex problem situation, to gain comprehension to suit his particular needs, and to derive solutions to problems. Increased capability in this respect is taken to mean a mixture of the following: more-rapid comprehension, better comprehension, the possibility of gaining a useful degree of comprehension in a situation that previously was too complex, speedier solutions, better solutions, and the possibility of finding solutions to problems that before seemed insoluble.”

I know what you’re thinking. She only read the first paragraph and picked something out. What a cheapskate, right? Wrong. While the reading this weekend was a whole lot to take in, it wasn’t impossibly long. Yes, this report was a bit lengthy, but it was much easier to read and understand than our last “nugget” assignment. Back to the important stuff… The reason I chose the first few sentences is because they are what set the stage for what I thought about the report the whole way through. My main thought while beginning this reading was, “Well, isn’t this what our careers are supposed to do for us and those around us?”

Think about it… We go to grade school, mainly because we have to, only to learn solutions to problems we didn’t know before. Things that increase our capabilities, and help us to discover a better way of thinking so we can reach speedier and improved solutions. Younger examples:  If we want to read a book, but don’t yet know how to read, school teachers help us sound out and identify with words that that help us comprehend what we are looking at. Older examples: You want to go out on a date, but don’t want your mom to chauffeur your romantic evening, so you sit through Driver’s Education where they teach you how to drive yourself around safely. Everyone has their own various way of learning so once we get the basics down, we adapt what we’ve just learned to our way of thinking, and improve on it the best way we can for a “more-rapid comprehension”. Once we are out of our “required learning” stage we go on to college or “the real world” then get jobs that specify in a particular area of business so we can achievebetter comprehension, the possibility of gaining a useful degree of comprehension in a situation that previously was too complex, speedier solutions, better solutions, and the possibility of finding solutions to problems that before seemed insoluble.” After we become experts in our fields we provide our knowledge to others so that they may have an easier understanding of a problem that they can later fix themselves if it were ever to happen again.

The more and more Engelbart continues to write about the H-LAM/T System the more I think about how it relates to life in general.

An extraordinary thought vector. This insight carries you directly into the heart of Engelbart’s work and vision. I’m eager to see what you’ll discover as you continue along these lines. Kudos!
