Bicycle Utopia

For one week the UCI race transformed Richmond’s downtown, reclaimed it from cars, delivered it to cyclists and pedestrians. It made Richmond feel like a city. People walking around on city streets that are usually empty – all of sudden we had public spaces. It felt good. But now, Sunday night, the barriers are coming down and the city is being returned to its automotive norm. It will be quiet, and less lively, and less urban… but oh, so much more convenient. People will shuttle from point A to point B and all those points in between will be lonely again.

Wasn’t it just wonderful to have such clear streets! it was also a bit eerie in some places with all the VCU folks gone.
