Nutrition in the schools is very important to the health of children. Children are at school for at least eight hours a day and that’s not taking into account if they play a sport or after an after school activity such as clubs. Most kids are at school more than they are at home so it is critical for schools to have a variety of nutritious food choices that students can choose from otherwise they don’t get enough nutrients. But fortunately, school systems and other governmental regulated organizations recognize this critical piece of evidence.
About “94% of school in the United States participate in the National School Lunch Program” (Journal of School Health pg. 424). This program ensures that schools that participate offer a wide variety of nutritious foods for students to indulge in. These schools are required to serve lunches and other meals that ensure that students get at least one-third of their daily value nutrient intake. They also have to include foods from each food category, which include dairy, whole grains, fruits, veggies etc. This is a very important trend for schools because students eat two meals at schools and only one at home some most of their nutrient intake is coming from the school system. Students need the correct amount of nutrients in order to do well in school and this is a well-known fact. To compliment the wide variety of nutritious foods, foods high in calories and fat are becoming less available options to students at school. This promotes a healthy lifestyle and great for our country.
