VCU Brain Tissue Resource Facility

The Brain Tissue Resource Facility (Brain Bank) is a tissue library to enable the study of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Lou Gehrig’s Disease and other brain disorders. In the subsequent pages, you will be able to learn about the purpose and history of the VCU Brain Bank, which is housed within the Department of Neurology. In addition, there are helpful links to selected neurodegenerative disease societies as well as important forms and information that can be downloaded.

If you have any questions after reading this site, please feel free to contact the bank’s director, Dr. Severn Churn.  He can be reached using the contact information below.  Please note, in the case of accidental death, the medical examiner’s office will take control of the body and override any donation arrangements.

“The cure for neurodegenerative diseases relies on a foundation of basic science. As a patient and clinical research advocate, I know that tissue donations are the cornerstone of research into
diseases such as Parkinson’s.”
–Fred Woodlief, DDS
