Towards the end of the semester, we started learning more about chinese idioms and poems. The idioms and poems we watched in class were both entertaining and meaningful. I decided to look for one myself and came upon this idiom story on determination. I found the meaning of this story very true as hardwork and determination payoff in someway.

The video features two speakers, both switch from Chinese to English regularly. It helps keep the listener engaged while they teach. They speak slow enough that you can understand every word, which is good for increasing proficiency in a new language. At least one of the speakers is a teacher. He tells stories from his time as a teacher. They teach grammar along with vocabulary. Albert teaches from a new perspective, he learned to read and speak Chinese before learning to write. This is a good video for people with a non-traditional foundation in the language.

This song is named “Song of the Yellow River Boatmen”. It comes from the Yellow River Piano Concerto and Chorus. This song is my favorite piece of Chinese music. I like the song because of its exciting tone and the way that the instruments match the pace of the singing. The song was written in 1939 by Xian Xinghai. He studied music in Paris and learned violin and clarinet there. In the 1930’s he returned to China to compose music. He composed music that combined Chinese and Western styles during the war with Japan. He wrote this music to inspire the Chinese people. The first song of the concerto and chorus is “Song of the Yellow River Boatmen”. Its first words are: “朋友！你到过黄河吗？你渡过黄河吗?”. The Yellow River is introduced with these words. The song talks about the danger of the river and the people who cross it. The first part is loud and fast. This represents the danger of the river crossing. The second part is slower and calm. This represents the relief of the people who crossed the river. The Yellow River is an important part of Chinese life and culture. The song uses the Yellow River to inspire the Chinese people to defend their country. The song uses many instruments. The first version used only Chinese instruments. These Chinese instruments were the: Er Hu, Xiao San Xian, Pipa and Dizi. They had to use Chinese instruments because they had no western ones in Yanan. Later versions of the song used western instruments such as the: horn, flute, cello, violin and piano. Some versions of the song use only Chinese or western instruments while other versions use both. This song is an important part of Chinese music. It is played often in both China and the west.

Two White Chicks in China (TWCC) is a podcast about living in China as a foreigner. The host’s names are Nora and Hollie, they are both living in Shenzhen. They have a lot of funny stories about dating Chinese men, strange Chinese etiquette and trying new foods. They have both lived in China for about 4 years. Hollie is English, and Nora is American. They answer questions about China such as: transportation, dating, working, and how China is different from the United States. My favorite episode is when they talk about weird food and products you can buy in China. In each episode, they tell you some interesting news from China. They also teach you a Chinese word or phrase. Although the podcast is in English, I have learned a lot about Chinese culture and modern day news.
