Week #9

TU OCT 21:  Mid-term Essay Exam Part 1 DUE in class.   POLLAN, CHAPTERS 4 – 7 DUE TODAY.  In-class self-assessment.  In-class group meetings.  If you missed class you need to check in with your group immediately!

TH Oct 23: Read “25 Ingredients in McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets” (see url below; copy and paste into your browser)

Blog:  Find one fast food that you don’t mind eating (or may enjoy eating).  Use internet research to find the breakdown of ingredients in the fast food you chose.  After listing all ingredients in the order in which they appear, do more research to find out WHAT each of the ingredients actually ARE.  For example, if your food contains “modified hydrogenated soybean oil” you will need to Google that ingredient, read about it, and then summarize what this ingredient is made from based on your research.   Your post should include your ingredients, explanations of what ingredients are if we’ve never heard of them, links to research you used to find out about your ingredients, at least one image, and your personal responses to these ingredients.  Be prepared to share your blog posts in class as we discuss Pollan’s “The Meal” chapter.

Week #1

T Aug 26:  (In-class: Client introductions)  Set up your Rampages blog at rampages.us.  Create a page called About to include uploading at least one photo of yourself, or image that you wish to represent yourself.  Avatars are okay. Also include a bio to describe yourself.  Humorous bios are okay too.

Read:  “Power at the Table: Food Fights and Happy Meals.”

Response Post:  Blog about your personal response to this reading.

TH Aug 28:  Below is the link to the Google Docs shared with the class.  Please copy and paste the URL to your blog on the Google Doc, then ADD your name and BLOG URL to the document.  This must be done asap — at the latest, class time on TH Aug 28.

Read:  “You Will Eat All of That:…” 
Nugget Post:   Take a key “nugget” that resonates for you in the reading.  Copy and paste the nugget into your blog post.  Write about why this nugget has meaning for you.  Share a personal anecdote or observation, or link out to something else the nugget calls to mind. Make the nugget meaningful to the reader by reflecting on it, raising questions, and drawing in other material that it makes you think about.   You must add at least ONE image in this post.  Click “Add Media” box at top of text box, then you can upload a photo from your computer (one of your own photos or one you found online).

Week #2:

TU Sept 2: 

Work on Group Formation Project Phase I.  Meeting scheduled with clients due.  (Team leader posts meeting time in her/his blog by today).  Take screen shot of email confirmation for the blog post (if you have one).

Listen to “An Introduction to Industrialization of Food System” (Johns Hopkins Lecture Series).  This lecture can be found on BLACKBOARD, under “Course Document.”

Blog Post:  Title your Blog post: “Introduction to Industrialization of Food Systems.”  Take notes about the lecture in your blog (to refer back to for your mid-term).  Then  write a brief response to the issue from the lecture that most concerns or surprises you. Be prepared to share your post with the class.

Comment on 3 of your group member’s blog posts (either about the first or second reading). Blog Post: Client Meeting. Perceptions about Client Needs, Work Space, and Initial Meeting.  Every student who met with the client must Blog about Client meeting.  Include all notes you took during the client meeting, and all questions you asked.

2 — Change your blog comment moderation so that we do not have to wait for you to moderate comments on your blog:  HOW TO MODERATE COMMENTS:

Go to DASHBOARD and then to  “Settiings” on the left side menu.  Scroll over SETTINGS and you see will DISCUSSION.  Click on DISCUSSION.

Week #3

TU Sept 9:  Meeting with Client due.  The meeting must take place before today.

Blog Post:  Client Meeting. All students should blog about meeting with clients, to include notes you took and questions you asked, perceptions about meeting, space, and client needs.   All student blog posts about client meetings are due today and will be pulled up during class for discussion to prepare for in-class work on Work Plans.

TH Sept 11:  Group Formation Project Phase I due at end of day 11;59 pm.
Terrance Walker from the VCU RamPantry will be a guest speaker in the class. 
All members of the RamPantry group must be present or will lose points for client meeting blog post.   All of you will be fascinated at the data he has collected about food insecurity in our student population.  After Mr. Walker’s general presentation to our class, PP group and RR group may convene outside class to finalize their group formation work if needed.  RamPantry groups will officially split and discuss specific group goals with Mr. Walker.

Work on Phase 11 of Group Formation Project.

Week #4

TU  Sept 16:   Complete Client Meeting Report Client Meeting Report:  Client Meeting Reports should be completed on Google Docs.  PP and RR groups began this work in class on 9/9.  The Rampages group needs to complete this report since your meeting with Mr. Walker in class on 9/11.  Client Meeting Reports must be completed by the group (collaborative effort) and shared with me by class time on TU Sept 16.  This means one group member should email me the link to the completed Google Doc.

Rampantry Group:  I created you a Client Report form, since your group worked on questions to prepare for Mr. Walker’s visit during class on 9/9 and did not have a Client Report document yet.   After his visit on Thursday, you must complete your Client Report form as well.  If you took good notes, this should not be difficult to complete.   Rampantry Client Report Google Docs link can be found below:

TH Sept 18:

Edit BLOG:    Make edits to your blog as discussed in class.  Specific headings should include:  About/bio, Reading Notes/Responses, Group Formation, Client Work.  (I am having a terrible time finding the group formation work in blogs.  Without these headings, your blogs are too difficult to navigate.  Please spend time before Thursday setting up headings and nesting parts under the appropriate heading.  For example, under Group Formation you should have the team building page nested below it.  See this tutorial for additional help:  Building pages with menus and Categories

Also, on your Dashboard, at the left, you will see a link to TUTORIALS that will help you do anything you’d like to do to make your blog more interesting, appealing and accessible to readers.   Be prepared to report out during class about changes you made in your blog.

Complete:  Complete a Peer Review Form for everyone in your Group  Formation Project group.  This review should provide a review of each participant’s work on the Group Formation Project, the Client Meeting, and the Client Meeting Report.  This link will take you to the form.  After you complete it for the first person, you will see a message asking you to add another response, and you click that link, which will take you to an empty review form that you should complete for a second group member, a third, and so on.   Peer review forms are only visible to ME and will remain confidential.   You will complete this form again at mid-term as well.  (The form link can also be found under the Daily Assignments menu).

Week #5

TU Sept 23:   Prepare for work in your groups for clients.  Bring ideas that you’ve found by browsing the internet for ideas.  Look at what other nonprofits like your own are doing on social media or in blogs.  Bring some examples to share with your group   Bring laptops also.

Your homework is simply bring NEW ideas to your group meetings on Tuesday (9/23). Look at what other nonprofits like your own are doing on social media or in blogs.  Bring some examples to share with your group.

Continue to experiment with blog themes.  Your blog should be organized by nesting pages under page headings, as shown in class.  If you click your blog’s “Dashboard,” click the “tutorials” link for links to quick tutorials on how to structure and organize your blog.  The deadline for this work has passed, but you should continue to experiment with your blog to choose themes that allow you to be as creative as possible.   Any reader should be able to easily navigate your blog.  (If your client contact went to your blog, would she/he be able to find your client work quickly?)

Blog headings should include:   About, Group Formation, Readings (Include lectures under Readings), and Client Work (or a similar title).   I liked that some bloggers included group bios under the About section, although you may end up moving this in your final project.  An example of a well-organized, easy-to-navigate blog:  Cathryn’s blog:  http://rampages.us/williamsca24/

 

TH Sept 25:
Read:  “Three Short Readings from Social Media Collective” — link here.  Think about these readings as your review the Point of Participation Assignment below.

TU Sept 30  Class Cancelled.  I will be in New Orleans presenting a conference paper.  Find two nonprofits or food advocacy groups who use your social media platform of choice (as agreed upon in class on TH 9/25) and be prepared to show what you consider to be “effective” posts on those sites.  Google “university food pantries” to get some names of other universities who have food pantries, and then check out their use of your social media platform.  I’d like to see a range of food advocacy groups showcased in class on Thursday before we discuss the reading.

TH Oct 2:  Read and be prepared to discuss Michael Pollen’s  Our National Eating Disorder.  You can also find the reading under the “Readings” tab on our class blog’s home page.

Week #7:

TU Oct 7:  If you did not present your social media platform on Thursday, you will do so Tu Oct. 5.  We will discuss Pollen’s Our National Eating Disorder.  Please review this reading for class (It was assigned for TH Oct. 2.

Blog about:  1) the Pollen reading (above)– his major arguments and your response to these.  2) the Point of Participation Partner share work you did, as well as the ideas you got during the presentations Thursday.  Do not forget to include examples of how other food advocacy groups have used your social media platform. 3) Your volunteer work this past week.

Read:  Handout reading “How do you get people to crave?” from Michael Moss’ Salt, Sugar, Fat. (If you missed class, the handout can be retrieved from the yellow folder on my office door in Harris 5107).

TH Oct 9:  Read “Lunchtime is all Yours,” from Michael Moss’ Salt, Sugar, Fat. (handout)  If you were absent and did not get the handout, you can find it (and all handout readings) on my office door in a yellow folder: Harris 5107.  Stop by anytime to retrieve your reading.  Getting the reading is part of your homework if you missed class.  While I try to scan most readings, the last two readings were distributed in hard copies.

Prepare for Class discussion on Thursday Oct 9:  We will discuss the last three assigned readings:  Pollen’s “Our National Eating Disorder” (see link in Oct 7 assignment), and Moss’ “How do you get people to Crave?” and “Lunchtime is all Yours” (both handouts).   Be prepared for discussion and/or/maybe a reading quiz.

 

Week #8

TU Oct 14:  I am assigning 4 chapters from Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma. ALL four chapters should be read by Tuesday Oct 21 (the first day back from Reading Days).  I’ve spaced them out below so that you will see the necessity of reading over the next week, instead of saving all four chapters for one night.

Read Chapter 4 from Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma.  Link to Chapter 4 “The Feedlot” is here (and the reading can be found under the Readings tab on the class blog home page).

Read Chapter 5 from Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma.  Link to Chapter 5 “The Processing Plant” is here (and the reading can be found under the Readings tab on the class blog home page).

Blog about these two chapters.  Pollan’s journey is one you are not likely to forget.  Please include impressions you have as you read, as well as interesting findings Pollan writes about.

Blog about your response to these chapters, as well as the key claims to help you remember it for mid-term.  CHAPTERS 4, 5, 6, 7 WILL BE DISCUSSED IN CLASS ON TU OCT. 21 AND WILL BE INCLUDED ON THE MID-TERM EXAM ON TH OCT. 23.

Complete Take-home Mid-term Part 1:  Based on Erin Burke Brown’s presentation in class Tuesday 10/14, the essay “The Four Furies: Primary Tensions between Service-Learners and Host Agencies,” link: Mills (2012_Four Furies AND your experience with your service-learning agency as narrated in your blog, write a 4 page reflective essay.  See Mid-term Part 1 here: Mid-term Exam Essay Part 1   Essays should be PRINTED on paper, double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font.  (This is the first assignment you will hand to me by paper copy!)
