Monday is nugget day

 

“Computers are simply a necessary and enjoyable part of life, like food and books. Computers are not everything, they are just an aspect of everything, and not to know this is computer illiteracy, a silly and dangerous ignorance.”

Computers are becoming everything. Those enjoyable things mentioned such as food and books are now computer involved. Books can be purchased and viewed digitally on devices known as the Nook or Kindle and food coupons can be viewed and orders palced using digital devices. In one of my previous blog posts, there was even talk of a printer that can create  edible items. So, it is true that computers are an aspect of everything, but I believe they are  progressing to be the entirety of all things we engage ourselves with.

Since computers are indeed becoming more than an aspect of life, it’s true that computer illiteracy is a dangerous characteristic to possess. In a world where everything is becoming automated by computers and technology, the average human will absolutely have to have a general knowledge on the workings of these machines. It takes patience, but I believe it is a knowledge of which everyone should be required to obtain.

People used to wash laundry and dishes by hand and that was the only way they knew how to get their items in a cleanly state. However, a washing machine was introduced to the world. Upon the purchase of this device, the consumer had to learn how to operate the machine properly. This concept obtaining probably did take some time to get used to and understand, but once the technique was established, washing clothes became a very easy and less time consuming chore.

I believe that computers fall under the same concept of the washing machine. It’s an amazing device that can help one save so much time and energy, but reluctance to learn it’s tools can leave one in complete frustration. If everyone took the time to learn how to operate a computer, I believe the world would be more prosperous. In that same breath however, if computers begin to take over the world as they seem to be progressing in capability towards, then i fear it could run human existence into a trivial state given they would be able to function so much more properly and efficiently than a human specimen.

There are classes one can take at the Apple stores or public libraries that improve technological literacy, but society has to be willing to take those steps. In a world that relies so heavily on computing capability, it is a tool necessary to even the most general of public.

 

Helium Inquiry…Inflate with Comments Please!

1.         Every year on my birthday as a child, my parents bought balloons as celebration décor as I’m sure many parents do for their children. These bouncy pieces of plastic are filled with an element that allows them to defy gravity in a sense. This element is called helium. I was fascinated by it’s properties and how it was able to float so easily. As I looked into acquiring more knowledge, I came across something that saddened and quite frankly scared me a bit. The Earth’s helium is depleting at rapid levels. We are losing helium so steadily that in a few years the element will be extinct in our world. The intolerable aspect of this epidemic is how carelessly humans are still using helium. I want to find a way to bring awareness to the dilemma at hand and I believe the first step is to target those engaged in the digital age. After all, helium is a part of the Earth’s composition for a reason, and I fear that if we exhaust it’s entire existence then we will disrupt the world’s balance which could result in some phenomenon we are not yet aware of nor predicting since this subject is so overlooked.

 

2.         I plan to further investigate the issue of helium depletion through the vector of scientific research in order to target the social media dwellers with facts, statistics, and solutions. My sub-topics relating to this will be causes and solutions on how to sustain helium by limiting the nonsensical uses we abuse in society today.

 

3.         I believe that if the public is informed through social media vectors then they will begin to grow concern and spread the word. Once the awareness of helium loss is ignited, I have no doubt it will spread like wildfire throughout the web.  I want to create a video that engages the reader of my inquiry through multimedia that predicts a world without helium in order to truly evoke the sense of urgency at hand if we want to continue living in a world where helium exists.

Progress and Research Reflection

Each week of this class brings new surprises to me. I am starting to utilize concepts and ideas from this class into my life unplugged from the digital world. As it turns out though, much of what I thought that digitally untouched world was actually does involve a bit of technology however minute it may be. For example, I travel a bit with my job and thought of that to be something that didn’t involve a heavy load of computer use. This week however I was traveling to places I had not yet been and was in need of a GPS system. I’ll admit it, I know how to read a map, but it’s so much easier and convenient to just type in a location and go! So, my traveling was aided by a computer which made me feel a bit defeated. So, not only was I traveling in a place unknown, but my brain too was starting to realize the unrecognized notion that I do indeed rely more heavily on computers than what I was originally aware.

I had given a bit of thought to my research project prior to the announcement of the proposal deadline, but hadn’t done as much research because I was still unsure if my initial idea was where I wanted to go. I now know that I absolutely want to work with the idea of the Earth’s rapid loss of helium due to inconsiderate human use. This is a topic I have been passionate about for quite some time and found this a perfect opportunity to reach many people since we are networking so much in this class. I even tried to start a Facebook page one time to raise awareness of this growing epidemic, so I figured this would be a great way to tie in the digital aspect of this course. It’s exciting knowing that so many will finally read my views and knowledge of helium loss because prior to this upcoming paper I have never actually expressed my ideas in an organized manner to an audience the size of Thought Vectors.

As of now I believe my progress is right on target!

 

Concept #3 Comments and Links

When I first started this I didn’t think there was any possible way for the sentences to actually form a comprehendible piece of work. However, I was wrong! My blog post seemed to flow swimmingly! Of course there were one or two sentences that didn’t completely formulate a clear and concise idea, but overall I believe most of the blog posts including mine that I read gave a general understanding to the reader. This class is really getting me to expand my ways of thinking and writing.

The first paragraph of Almamhouda’s blog was one I really enjoyed and agreed with in particular.

I read many interesting things from the blogs, and a large percentage of them seemed to flow with the same general concept of man and computer living as one. I guess that is because most of our assignment thus far have focused on the formation of opinions on that matter. Before this class I thought that mankind relied heavily on the use of technology, mainly computers, but had never fully expressed an interest or had knowledge of the idea that man and computer could one day if not in the near future be living in a symbiotic relationship.

Concept Experience (Augmenting Human Intelligence)

I suspect it will take people about 10 minutes or less to read and comprehend this blog post, but it took me over an hour to actually produce it. Whenever I delve into the process of deep thinking, I tend to find myself in that zone for the remainder of the day. I have never been able to grasp simple concepts because I over think them by my very nature. I tried to forget about the assignment and just go with my stream of consciousness, but it wasn’t quite that easy. I think more things should be priced as well as Raman noodles. I enjoy this because it’s almost as if I can feel my brain working and expanding to capture the assignment at hand. I think this class is a great way to get students tapped into their creative and expressive side, while simultaneously generating ideas and inquiries that can apply in a real world situation. The use of peer communication via many websites all syndicated to one course I feel will lead to a bottomless exploration of opinions and innovation. “Man’s population and gross product are increasing at a considerable rate, but the complexity of his problems grows still faster, and the urgency with which solutions must be found becomes steadily greater in response to the increased rate of activity and the increasingly global nature of that activity. Augmenting man’s intellect, in the sense defined above, would warrant full pursuit by an enlightened society if there could be shown a reasonable approach and some plausible benefits.” The idea of populations and products increasing has always been something I was aware of, but in addition to that this passage presented the notion of the complexity of man’s problems. In the past people have had problems of building homes, scavenging food, working, and raising a family. That was much simpler and faster than the languages we speak today. “Present-day computers are designed primarily to solve preformulated problems or to process data according to predetermined procedures. It seems entirely possible that, in due course, electronic or chemical “machines” will outdo the human brain in most of the functions we now consider exclusively within its province.” Computers are not living breathing organisms…yet at least. No matter how personalized it is or voices that speak to you from these devices seem real, the computer is still not an organism. “The scientists, burying their old professional competition in the demand of a common cause, have shared greatly and learned much. What are the scientists to do next?” This explores the idea of where the split between the realm of technology and the realm of the human mind lies. Consideration for this device is no longer necessary, because I believe it already exists in what we call the “smartphone”. These devices do indeed allow an individual to store basically their entire life on one device. They really are the symbiosis of man and computer. With a smartphone, when visiting songkick,  I find a band that I like that’s playing in the Richmond area and from there can head over the venue website, which happened to be the National. Food is edible. Cats have fur. It’s that simple! I’m excited to keep digitally investigating with you guys!

Nugget #3 (When Did Life Get So Complicated?)

         “Man’s population and gross product are increasing at a considerable rate, but the complexity of his problems grows still faster, and the urgency with which solutions must be found becomes steadily greater in response to the increased rate of activity and the increasingly global nature of that activity. Augmenting man’s intellect, in the sense defined above, would warrant full pursuit by an enlightened society if there could be shown a reasonable approach and some plausible benefits.”

         I know this is one of the first paragraphs in the passage, but it really resonated with me. The idea of populations and products increasing has always been something I was aware of, but in addition to that this passage presented the notion of the complexity of man’s problems. Which is incredibly true, problems today entail a great deal much more than they did in the “horse and sailboat days”. In the past people have had problems of building homes, scavenging food, working, and raising a family. Given those were incredibly hard tasks on which to accomplish in the days when they were at the gravest, but they are simple ideas. Housing, food, money, family…very simple ideas.

         Today, people have a great deal of problems in addition to that prior set of dilemmas. Their homes entail technological advances that break and cause issues such as flooding and A/C and heating units breaking. Those are just a couple examples of the greater complexity of housing compared to back in the olden days. Food is more complex in the sense of all the varieties and knowledge we now have on nourishment. Money is more complex because these technological advances have caused a need for larger sums of income. Those home appliances need electric and water to perform, which cause an excess in bills. Family life is also very complex because there are more options for children in the future. Getting into a respectable college is something most people strive for in their family dynamic, so extracurricular activities and possible participation in private schools become aspects parents must now deal with.

         I think this picture does a great job illustrating visually what I am trying to convey through words. Everyone has their own set of complex issues and their own way of dealing with them. Mankind is becoming somewhat of a machine in the way that we are geared to concur problems in our path in order to create a more prosperous life for ourselves. It’s true that the complexity of our problems is at a steadfast increase, and the only way to deal with it may indeed be the ideas of which are spoken about in augmenting human intelligence.

Weekly Digest #2

This week allowed me to find conceptual ideas within a seemingly simplistic inquiry. I enjoy how this class has allowed me to broaden my thinking into a deeper realm on which to explore further into theories.  After reading everyone’s nuggets from this week, I am extremely impressed with how innovative and inquisitive members of this course are.

 

One blog post I really enjoyed reading was this one: http://rampages.us/aramini/2014/06/20/nugget-2-man-computer-symbiosis-2/ because of the author’s non-conventional take on technology. Most people are craving this digital revolution and cannot await the newest products on the line. However as expressed in this blog, the idea of a more futuristic in the sense of technological advances does not sit well with the author. I have to agree because I feel that the more fixated we are in technology, the more distant we become with reality which could ultimately lead to human existence being irrelevant if machines can function for the world’s needs.

 

Further branching onto that, I had disapproval of the idea of symbiosis around man and computer. Expressed in my blog post http://rampages.us/gaileydm/wp-admin/post.php?post=19&action=edit symbiosis must be between to living things. This is one of those key things of the UNIV 200 course that has made me branch into the deeper realm of thinking.

 

Sometimes when I first read these assignments I am extremely weary on how I will go about completing them because they seem so simplistic yet incredibly complex when it comes to analyzing the ideas behind the nugget essays and concept experiences. I am in agreement with the author in the blog: http://rampages.us/nirali/2014/06/20/concept-experience-2/ with that when assigned with a task to come up with painfully simple questions, the portion of your brain that normally runs through various random ideas seems to get all jammed and confused. However I enjoy this because it’s almost as if I can feel my brain working and expanding to capture the assignment at hand.

 

Overall, I enjoyed this week’s course work. My favorite blog post was indubitably Anisa’s http://rampages.us/anisakannan/2014/06/17/nugget-2b-man-computer-symbiosis/ . Her way of involving something that is very popular on multimedia websites world round, cats, brought many angles of the course into a well produced product. I’m exciting to keep digitally investigating with you guys!

Formulated vs. Formulative….Food?

Nighttime is dark

Man cannot fly

Concrete is hard

Cats have fur

Cars move

Food is edible

But why?

 

I started this blog post with a seemingly simple question, “why is food edible?”. So, being a member of the digital age, I decided to type that seemingly obvious question into Google to see what I could find. To falsify my prediction, a very interesting result, the first result, http://money.cnn.com/2011/01/24/technology/3D_food_printer/ claimed there is now a 3D printer that can create edible food. My simplistic question just got a whole lot more complex. If a printer can create food, how is that edible?

 

The 3D food printer turned out to be a little less exciting than what I was expecting. You have to load it with raw food you want to be shaped and printed, it doesn’t actually create food on it’s own processor system. It’s still pretty cool though. One of the scientists in charge of the food printer stated, “It’s really going to be the next stage of the digital revolution.” That quote reminded me a lot of this course and how it’s revolutionizing a classroom and thinking pattern into a digital submersion.

 

From there I decided to search what are the criteria upon which edibility resides in food. This got me more specific answers than just asking why food was edible. The site I used fir this information gave the clear and concise description that food is digestible nutritional bits that are not poisonous to those of which consume them. Well, why are some things poisonous to humans and not others? I know genetics and all that, but it’s still a cool concept to ponder on why some things are geared with different genetics.

 

This one simple question of food’s edibility ended up sending me all the way to the deep theoretical concepts of human genetics meaning. I have to admit when I first read this prompt I was a little worried on how I would be able to write about it with something interesting, but it turns out I discovered one of the most enlightening things I’ve heard of for quite some time with the idea of a 3D food printer.

Nugget #2.5 Man-Computer Symbiosis (With Links)

The process behind producing a final result does always feel longer by a great magnitude. Even writing this nugget applies to this idea. I read the essay, picked out an excerpt, thought about how I would make it special and applicable to my life. and now I am entering the final stage of actually producing the readable nugget. I suspect it will take people about 10 minutes or less to read and comprehend this blog post, but it took me over an hour to actually produce it.

Computers have reduced the timespan from idea to product by some degree, but I do not believe any piece of technology will fully diminish the effort stage of producing work. In this student’s blog http://rampages.us/khoorivcu/2014/06/17/bman-computer-symbiosisb/ they give great examples of devices that link us to a computer, but those examples still require a span of time to pass before result. Research will always have to be researched and delved into deeply for a great understanding. Things such as spark notes help with the time of comprehension, but even though it cuts back a little bit of time, there is still time put into it making it false to say there was no time nor work between thought and product. I could endlessly name devices that cut back on this vortex sucker of time, but the fact that some degree of time no matter how minute it is will always be present. This blog author does a great job of exemplifying the time to computer relationship http://rampages.us/melikazand/2014/06/17/man-computer-symbiosis/ .

Robots were heavily on my mind while reading this passage. They really are the symbiosis of man and computer. However, if I remember correctly from  my science class to be involved in a symbiotic relationship, two organisms must be present. ORGANISMS, meaning lifeforms. Computers are not living breathing organisms…yet at least, especially with the grounds on which http://rampages.us/jawadabdi/2014/06/17/nugget-2-man-computer-symbiosis/ states a human form computer. No matter how personalized it is or voices that speak to you from these devices seem real, the computer is still not an organism. Another viewpoint on man computer symbiosis not being completely accurate can be found on this blog http://rampages.us/anisakannan/2014/06/16/nugget-2-man-computer-symbiosis/ . So, I do not believe a man-computer symbiosis is possible just based merely upon technical definition, but it is possible and without a doubt probable that will continue to advance technologically. In this blog, http://rampages.us/staycurious/2014/06/17/man-computer-nugget/ the author gives a great visual example of how we could one day fall victim to technological pull.

A concept from “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick that popped into my mind when reading this was the mood organ. A machine makes a human feel a certain way which to me is kind of a synthesizing theory of a machine and mankind.
