Milkman Before refrigerators were a common household item, people had no way of keeping milk from spoiling. Milkmen would deliver the product to people’s homes on a daily basis, which was considered a very essential job to society at the time.

Elevator Operator They were in charge of taking passengers to their desired floor and keeping passengers safe. Only an individual who excelled at precision could be given this job.

Lector This was your modern day podcast or radio. Factories used to hire live lectors who would come into the factory and read literature to the workers to keep them entertained while doing often tedious work.

Phrenologist It was believed that by examining the shape and unevenness of a head or skull, one could discover the development of the particular cerebral “organs” responsible for different intellectual aptitudes and character traits. So..go around feeling peoples’ heads to tell them what kind of personality they have? 

Knocker-uppers (human alarm clocks) These people would walk around with long sticks tapping on people’s windows, throwing pebbles, and shouting at the top of their lungs to make sure people were up on time for work.

Mudlarks collected and sold things they found in rivers Find things in the James River and sell them..it might be hard to actually find things of value. or anything at all for that matter.

The Internet has arguably hurt the postal service more than any other business. The drastic reduction in mail delivery has cost thousands of jobs in delivery and caused many post office closures around the country. Now, mail sorting jobs are set to disappear as a new automated system is implemented. Between 2008 and 2018, more than 54,500 jobs, or about 30 percent of current positions, are expected to vanish.

Food Safety Testers Tested food (usually for kings and queens) to make it wasn’t poisoned. I could just go around campus and take a bite of peoples’ food before they ate it.. *maybe have a stand in shafer or something that says free food testers (testing for poison in your food)
