How is the border between Beszel and Ul Qoma more of a mental border as opposed to a physical border and where do similar borders like this exist in the real world?
Beszel and Ul Qoma have established that there is a physical divide between the two cities, however, due to limited details, it seems as though the border is more of a mentally constructed idea rather than a physical one. The use of “seeing and unseeing” is one of the methods used to create this mental border that is seen in both cities and passed down generationally. These types of mental borders are seen in the real world today:
- Northern Ireland and Ireland: a divide between religion and national identity
- France: a divide between religion and politics
- Pakistan: a divide within a religion
- United States: the Black Lives Matter movement, or any movement within the nation really
