Inquiry Project Proposal

Gender Clothing Differences:

The fact that the clothing of the characters differs at all should be a cause for concern. With no real reason to do this the industry helps to create stereotypes of the male and female characters, where the females are wear skimpy armor while the males wear full body armor. These differences lead to other stereotypes where the females bodies are all well proportioned/perfect as well as the males. These stereotypes lead to the industry bordering on sexist and most gamers simply accept it without a care.

Gaming’s new focus:

These scenes are from a recently released game known as Conception 2: Children of Seven Stars. While the game is about defeating monsters with your party the over the top transformations of the female heroines helps to build up some of the stereotypical images that games are beginning to be known for. The females either have extremely well developed bodies or underdeveloped bodies there is no middle ground, no “normal” character. These types of transformation are becoming more abundant in the role playing game genre and creating many stereotypes that are not necessary. Not only that but the clothing difference between the male and the females is also here as well.

Industry Growth:

With the growth of the gaming industry its no wonder we see so many different types of games out there. Almost everyone plays games in a way or another with so much available ¬†technology.¬†With the increase in players we need to make sure that we don’t instill within them these stereotypical body images.

My Research Question:

For these reasons I want to look at: How does the difference in male and female armor create gender stereotypes within video games? For here I can focus on the transformations of characters in their armor as well as armor from a variety of games, but I will focus on games in the Role Playing Games(RPG) genre.

  1. Hi Alexander,
You did a great job on this proposal, especially with the images that you used. Without them, this would have been hard to really understand. You were the only presenter to use a video, and that really made your proposal stand out. Good work.

Some questions about your proposal: You said, “For these reasons I want to look at: How does the difference in male and female armor create gender stereotypes within video games? For here I can focus on the transformations of characters in their armor as well as armor from a variety of games, but I will focus on games in the Role Playing Games(RPG) genre.”

When you revise your research question (RQ), be sure to say “Role Playing Games (RPG)” in your actual RQ. I don’t know that much about RPG, but I assume there are a lot of them. Are there hundreds, thousands? Do they ALL use armor to clothe their characters? You RQ seems to indicate that they do.

I look forward to talking with you at our conference this week. Please get signed up right away!

  2. I forgot to say one thing before I published my previous comment. I’m not really seeing you discuss 3-4 reasons WHY this proposal should be funded. Why is this an important issue?

  3. I really liked how you including both pictures and a video from a video game. Although i do not know anything about video games, I do see where you are coming from when you talk about the different clothes that each gender wears. Im not sure why this topic interests you, other than the fact that you probably play video games, since you didnt clearly state them in your proposal.

  4. An exciting topic to say the least, trends in video gaming have most definitely shifted to the more “fan-service” design of characters. I find it odd though that you have restricted yourself to simply RPGs. Examples of this can be found in games across many genres, and you should explore those as well.

  5. I think that this is an interesting and important topic to consider. I think a large number of media formats, including video games, have continued the trend of objectifying women as well as creating unrealistic body image standards and both of these trends have a very negative effect on women in general.
