I think that women have so much to deal with in the world and that’s something that many men, including myself, will never have to go through. I think as an outsider looking in, it’s easy to forget the impossible standards of beauty that women are held to these days. There’s pressure to be thin, tall, have clear skin, and have no body hair. Although most of us are aware of the conflicts that arise in our every day lives from gender inequality the need to keep educating ourselves in very important. Its nice to hear you, as a man speak about your awareness and show concern! Men and woman certainly do have such different experiences in their life’s just depending on the gender. I see our society is growing with social equality and thankfully gender is one of those things, hopefully the issue of harrassment will be one of the first things to lessen!

Agreed! with you

I know just how you feel about your girlfriends safety and concern. I go through similar things. We went to Kings Dominion a few weeks ago and we spent a fair amount of time in the water park. I went to the bathroom and some random guy was staring at her for the entire time I was there. She ran over to me and just held me until he walked away. It made her very uncomfortable and scared. It is sad that the women in our society have to go through things like this.

I agree with your opening statement-everyone is so convinced they have it all figured out for some reason. You would think it’d be fairly easy to accept the reality of gender inequality, but because everyone has problems, it’s hard for those with privilege to accept/recognize their higher status. It’s funny you go straight into the topic of safety, as that’s the first thing I point out when speaking with someone who (somehow) still fails to recognize sexism is everywhere.

Also, here’s a great Aziz Ansari bit on the topic you and your girlfriend might appreciate 🙂

It’s hard being a woman: I can tell you that! and especially, coming from a family of all sisters and girl cousins with no boys at all in our family, my whole entire family is extra careful when it comes to our safety to keep us protected. My parents and cousins’ parents always worry and make sure we are all home at a certain hour and all our parents have become our friend on purpose so then they can hear about guys that we are talking to and they can explain to us their intentions and how to talk to them etc.
I have to agree with Iyla9, slowly but surely, our society is starting to have social equality. and junezc1, yes it is really scary! you have no idea! my heart always racing and i’m scared that someone is going to touch me inappropriately or anything of that sort.

You are fortunate to had already talked about economic inequality. I do not follow the news, and this was indeed my first connection between the topic. I did find the example of monopoly was witty, and was an interesting comparison. I will be more aware of what is going on globally, because it really is a serious topic and effects people dramatically.

Such a great post! I like how you stated that you didn’t think a 101 course could teach you so much in such a short time. I completely agree with you. Who knew a 100 level course could actually teach you something and make you work instead of it just being a review? I’ve enjoyed having you in my group this semester! I hope you enjoy what’s left of the summer and good luck to you in your future endeavors! 🙂
Epigenetics was definitely something I really enjoyed learning here! And was honestly surprised the first time I’d hear about this here as a biochemistry major and quickly learning after how big it’s getting in research! this class has certainly taught me a lot and that’s something I’m not surprised about! as a sociology class I knew we’d be sharing ideas and I really enjoyed that!
