“Marijuana has changed relatively little in the last forty years; yet our perceptions of this drug regularly evolve and we can expect opinions, and therefore our laws, to further change in the future.” This is from the society pages.org article you found Mr. Croteau. I find the pendulum effect that you described very interesting. Perhaps in…[Read more]

It’s really interesting how you draw the relationship between macro level food industries and them getting angry and possibly cutting off food importation. Though other countries would probably just increase the prices of food, I had never really thought about the impact something like that would have on social structure. People always talk about…[Read more]

If someone asked me to cut a portion of my finger off because my grandpa died, I would probably just walk away because that sounds so absurd. But in the Dani tribe, this is a totally normal thing definitely because of what you pointed out, it’s what generations before them had done, so now it’s what they do ask well. It’s interesting that only the…[Read more]

I am in no way supporting slavery, but I think it is forgotten that the civil war was not mainly about slavery and was more due to economic…[Read more]

When I had to choose which topic to write this blog post on, I thought that this option would be much harder, but I think you’ve really succeeded in proving your point. This class does have a culture because of the expectations we’re held up to, but I’m sure that we all hold ourselves up to different expectations. A lot of students probably see an…[Read more]

I think that choosing to make a video was a good choice for your topic. I think that a lot of people would probably be surprised by how much ballet and sociology can be related. I think it’s great that you found ways in which ballet has a culture of its own and how you can use it to connect with others. I was really surprised by how much social structure there was in the ballet world and how there is not only competition to be great but also competition with dancers themselves. I think this was a really strong use of the platform we were given and you did a great job.
I like how you stated that you hold all the power to succeed within yourself. Those are empowering and encouraging words. I also think it’s interesting how your fellow dancers are your best friends but you’re also competing against them. Ballet seems like such an interesting culture and unique. Thank you for sharing that with us. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your video. Side note: OUCH! My toes hurt just thinking about doing what you do on a daily basis! 😉
I think my toes are pretty much numb to pain after all these years haha! Thank you for the positive words!
You are correct that there is a hierarchy of power in ballet companies just as there are in corporations and government. Ultimately, the artistic director of a ballet company holds the most power and can choose which dancer he or she wants to perform in any given role. This aspect of ballet is often very frustrating to dancers because not getting the part you dream of is quite tough. Yet we push on and keep working towards our goals and this is where the “power over my own actions” idea comes into play for me.
