    • I find the audiovisual requirement for the introductory exercise a great idea! I think that’s a great way to begin to build a sense of community in the course. The flexible presentation format options allow for students to demonstrate their comfort with whatever forms of technology that they are comfortable with. Hopefully, your students will add to the presentation a sense of their personality. I think adding your personal example is great, but I hope it doesn’t constrain the possible formats that students might be interested in using.

    • I really like the intention of focusing on creating community in the beginning of an online course. Students may need to be directed to some of the resources they could use to create their introductions, such as Jing, etc. You could put this list in a Diigo group page. Great work!

    • Hi Lisa,
      You’re page looks great!!!

I think your activity is an important one. The online format can make students feel isolated, and bringing them together in such a way is likely to have a profound impact. I also like how you are planning to do the assignment yourself. That way, they can learn about you and also have a model for what they should do.

    • Hi Lisa –
I really like your idea about the presentation as the first assignment and your intentional desire to create a community. I completed my transitional DPT degree in an online program in 2006-2007. One of the things that I missed was understanding who was in our learning community. Of course technology advancements over even the past 5 years has transformed the ability to connect online.

The course I teach online is coming up this summer. The students have the advantage of having been together for a year face to face so they are very familiar with one another. I want to include assignments that require audiovisual components so even though they know one another I may use a version of this assignment so that they can become familiar with creating an audiovisual presentation with little pressure and few points!

      Thanks for the ideas!
      Shawne
