Wow, this is a great idea and something I might modify for one of my courses. I really like that this is forcing the students to think in a different way and potentially creating something really useful. I agree with David that you will definitely want to provide some examples to really get the students thinking in the right direction. I also…[Read more]

It’ll be interesting to see how students construct a compelling case given the affordances of the online format. There are a variety of media tools students can use to build compelling narratives, many of which we have tried out in OLE. You also have a bunch of choices when it comes to students presenting their work online. You’ll also have to decide which activities would be synchronous and which ones asynchronous.

Looking forward to seeing your Timeline when it’s done. Its a great way to weave multimedia into a narrative around your course. It’ll be great to see what kind of projects students can create with this tool. Here’s an example of a Timeline created by a VCU faculty member for his course: http://bit.ly/1Ca3UN6
and here’s a non-VCU example: http://bit.ly/1Ca3M0a

Going back to Bill Gates’ quote, you can also create your own content for students to use in your course, especially if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for. Even better perhaps you can start to think about how you and your students can use some of the tools you’ve looked at to contribute to the content of the course.

Glad you found some stuff of use! FYI, I was a bit confused at first by your post, until I realized that your links are essentially invisible with this theme. You might want to consider using a different theme–or maybe see if you can change the link colors.

I think one of the questions at the heart of your post is how to create community in an online course. How do you create opportunities for students to interact with each other in meaningful ways? Like Tom said there a plethora of tools out there on the web that can help online learners build connections. Perhaps starting by thinking about how you create community in your face to face classroom would spark some ideas about transferring that to your online class.

Glad to hear you are having a positive experience with OLE so far. We’ll keep your feedback in mind as we continue to shape the course. One interesting comment you made was how learning about online teaching is giving you ideas for face to face teaching : in light of that you might find this article interesting http://bit.ly/1MWJ58C

It sounds like you have a system that’s working for you and your students right now, in an online format some of your choices may change but the general idea of providing students the support they need will be the same
