• I agree that it is beneficial to know where our food comes from. It’s something that we would normally ever think about, but I think if we knew we would change the way we eat. i have never felt any emotions when […]

I’m the same way, I love food it is literally my life. But I’m not really that into cooking, I’m more of the type of person that eats out a lot. In a way I think that’s a good thing because I love to explore and try different foods all of the time. I am also basically unemployed, I feel like if I had more money, I would probably do more grocery…[Read more]

  • I absolutely agree when it comes to how some of us may shop for groceries. Recently I was doing a fast so I was literally forced to look at all of the nutrition facts before I purchased anything to avoid consuming […]

Hey! I admire your thoughtfulness as it pertains to food. You and I differ, I have never really thought that deep into food, to be concerned with what will be a waste. But like I said I really admire that. I have tried to think morally on what I eat recently, so like you I am eating mostly fruits and vegetables but haven’t come to the point where…[Read more]

Hey. I can relate to grouping up in an African-American family and even half of my family is Jamaican. Although, like you said we eat a lot of fish and fresh vegetables and fruits…. We never really think about all of the other ingredients we use to make what we eat taste “normal” to us. Morally we never really think about that kind of stuff……[Read more]

    • I also am a “foodie” and in LOVE with food. As I commented on another post I eat depending on my food as well as it’s taste. We should start thinking of morals when it comes to food. You should read “Should I eat this or nah?” it seems like the two of you have had similar experiences.

Hi! I definitely agree with you that service-learning classes should be a requirement. Initially, I had no idea that I would have to service in this class but now that I know I am actually really excited. I think that all students in could really benefit from an experience like this!

Hey! I think your idea of using service-learning with a student’s specific major is really interesting. I also think that it would actually be beneficial. As we talked about in class, I believe it is important to actually experience what you are learning, I think it extends your knowledge on certain topics and gives a better outlook on life!

    • It is true that our work on the farm will expose us to a lot of different kinds of people – all different ages and occupations. I like that, too. College exposes us to different kinds of people, but not in the same way that service learning might. This is probably a form of stepping out of our comfort zone. I like how you think that should be a requirement in schools, because trying new things is probably more effective than cramming information for a test.

    • Hey vajackson!

I really enjoyed your explanation and paraphrasing of Cress’s explanation of service-learning. In your words, “…increase their learning in ways that they may not be accustomed to. Service learning requires students to step outside of the classroom and physically learn, not by reading or writing but by using their actions positively in the community that surrounds them,” this gives a great understanding of the concept. Good job!

    • I have never worked on a farm before either, hopefully the new opportunity will be fun! I am glad that our whole class seems to be really supportive of the project we only just learned about and wants to make this opportunity the best for us. I hope we can all walk away saying we gained something. Like you said, we should all be better community organizer after this and be able to stand up for our community needs

    • One particularly smart idea here is the importance of open-mindedness – to different people, to different experiences, and to different ideas. Service learning plunges us into all of that, and it can be daunting because of that. But big rewards if you’re willing to dive in!
