Goes right along with our topic on STI/HIVs this week. It’s not one of our extra credit activities, but a great event nonetheless.

    • I enjoyed the Sex in the Dark presentation it was very informative. A lot of the discussion was veered to HIV. When a patient is being administered an Antibody test it is to determine if the patient reacts to the HIV antibody. Some patients are administered a NAT (4th generation with P24& Antibody) test. NAT test are used for sexual assault victims, drug users or people classified as high risk. High risk is classified as ten or more unprotected sex partners in a lifetime or three in a year. Travada (Prep) helps keep HIV under control if a person takes the medication before having sex with a person who has contracted HIV it acts as a barrier to protect the non-infected person. If a person is happened to be exposed to HIV they can take PEP this only works within the first 3 days. PEP is taken for 28 days to prevent a person contracting HIV. I would recommend students going to this event in the future.

Thank you for sharing! Sometimes we think we are giving our partner what we feel is important, but what they want and what we think they want may be totally different. How we value the aspects of love described on this site may be dependent on our past relationships or upbringing. It could be that we had seen our parents do things for one…[Read more]

Here’s a report on marijuana that may be of interest as we discuss drug use and abuse, especially for those sections that will be holding their debates this week:

    Websites:

    • After reading this article, I believe we should legalize weed. I think that would decrease the amount of users and it would be safer because people are not trying to sneak it. Crime would decrease as well because weed would be sold in stores like alcohol and cigarettes, and that,s not a crime unless the purchaser is underage. Just like alcohol, there should be an age limit to buy and consume. I believe that there should also be more information provided to our youth about these drugs. When kids are told not to do something they tend to have the urge to do the forbidden something.

Thanks for the recommendation – I think anything that encourages folks to be active is great. It’s not enough to exercise…it’s the sedentary behaviors that people have the other 23 hours a day that are the real problem. Hitting it hard at the gym just to sit around watching Netflix the rest of the day is counterproductive. Getting 10,000 steps…[Read more]

It is amazing how much sleep (or lack thereof) affects your quality of life. For so many students, sleep gets the lowest priority and is the first thing to go when time is limited. What we must realize is that getting sleep actually makes us more effective in whatever it is we want to do (whether it is studying, driving, exercising, weight loss,…[Read more]

Zumba is a great way to mix up your cardio workouts! With the festive atmosphere and the darkened room, you almost forget you’re exercising. 🙂

I agree that stress can be a good thing when put in the right perspective. With a healthy internal locus of control, you can decide what that stress does to you and for you.

I’m a huge fan of the plank. Obtaining (and maintaining) a strong core when you are young will certainly be beneficial as you age. It is also especially critical for those whose jobs require functional strength such as firefighters, construction workers, and military servicemen and women. In fact, the US Navy recognizes this and is considering…[Read more]
