Questing My Dream

I have to travel solo, it is not because I want to but I have no choice. My topic which is about “video email and email in education” is so different with other classmates who mostly talk about the effect of social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. I aware that video email is somewhat under social media category, however, instead of for everyone, I tend to make video email specifically for education category only. I want to find a way to show people that video email is formal in an informal way and it is suitable for education environment. Thus, I find my topic and purpose have nothing common to what others classmates does (That’s why I could not really do homework for Thursday 06/26/2014). Also, I acknowledge that I usually have different ideas and ways to procedure things compared to others. I am uncertain that the difference is for my good or not, but it is a big invisible wall that separate me from others, therefore, I prefer working alone for my good to finish the project and pass the class with high color.

Connection with Other Posts in Other Sections (Friday, 06/27/2014)

Treegirlblog: first, I really like her post. By reading that “Ultimately, it’s not that we use 10 percent of our brains, merely that we only understand about 10 percent of how it functions” I feel at ease for trying to use fully 100 percent of my brain within crazy pace. I am not sure that I see much connection between my nugget and hers, but I know at one point, she does encourage people to change and absorbing the new things. That is what I try to do with my topic of video email. It is not completely new things (ex: video message on skype) but it has never been used officially in school based. I was aiming for end up my research with a prompt question to school on using the new way of communication to reach out to students. Changing and daring to experience the new things is what keeps us evolving and developing.

Meridith Brindley: It is nice to combine things together for the greatest outcome. Although I disagree with her idea of “human together with artifacts,” we have the same point of view. I like to combine stuffs to finish it fast and efficiency. In my topic, I am not trying to say that we should change from email to video email immediately, but I mean to combine and convert slowly. We still have to write what we have to write, but the video helps our point of view being more realistic and interesting. These both together can help students to be more engaging to schools assumedly.

Just an average guy: I like how he used the word “domino effect.” To me, mostly everything happens within domino effect as one thing leads to another one. I don’t think there is a beginning or an end. It is all together just a chain of consequence of actions. It is very possible when he say that a cyborg or superhuman will be next step in human progression (I am not waiting for it). Thus, assuming that video email prompts works out and school agree to use them as primary way to communicate with students, what will be its domino effect? Students like it; students do not like it. Professors experience about it. Parents concern about it, etc. There is many possible outcomes that I am unaware, however, it is always worth to shoot a try to see whether the education is “adapted” the new technology world.

I am not sure how I could change my text originally; I think I was overload with ideas and new interesting thing about technology. However, I refer back to my 2nd nugget post, when I am strongly against the combination between man and machine. I think I was too extreme to write that nugget. However, after reading many blogs, I think that it is not that bad to have that type of connection. I mean as long as it is not over the limit of humanity among society, t should not be banned or against since up until that point, combination between human and machine can help to improve human’s life.

Nugget about Augmenting Human Intellect (Monday, 06/23/2014)

“We know that when the eye sees, all the consequent information is transmitted to the brain by means of electrical vibrations in the channel of the optic nerve. This is an exact analogy with the electrical vibrations which occur in the cable of a television set: they convey the picture from the photocells which see it to the radio transmitter from which it is broadcast. We know further that if we can approach that cable with the proper instruments, we do not need to touch it; we can pick up those vibrations by electrical induction and thus discover and reproduce the scene which is being transmitted, just as a telephone wire may be tapped for its message.”

I don’t really understand this text much but I have a feel that it is about my topic. I like it when I read “We know that when the eye sees, all the consequent information is transmitted to the brain by means of electrical vibrations in the channel of the optic nerve.” This is indirectly support for my topic of video email over traditional email. Video works well since they have movement that makes it easier to be caught by the electrical vibrations in the channel of the optic nerve rather than just simply message. Video email can also shorten the invisible distances between places and people; it actually saves time for the audiences to direct to the images that are processed through their optic nerve. They do not have to take time to imagine about the object or things. And just like the author said, we can reproduce the scenes once it is transmitted in the faster pace in the term of memory. These are some significant advantage that video email gives to its users, and they all matters for the sense of studying.

My interpretation of this is important because as all can see, there are so many good sides of video email that people have not thought of it yet. However, due to some limitations, school did not take those benefits in hand to start a trial period. We all want to have a best education system with all means; video email could be an excellent one to start in the long run of changing the old educational system to the more technology based study in which will teach students more about time schedule and self-direct study, the two things that the real world asks for in every graduate.

Read this “Well hey there…hey stranger! *stifled laughter* Uhh, heyo! I’m Domics and I…don’t know what to say…I mean, why…why do I even have to…? Ok, I make animations and shtuff. I guess…umm…here I’ll share snippets of my life so I guess you could say my whole channel is like I draw my life…or animate my life…kinda? And I don’t know…I DON’T EVEN KNOW SON! I’ll probably also animate random sketches and skits and whatnot uhh…here and there…and underwear…and solar flare…and grizzly bear…I…I don’t know really! Just whatever I want and whatever I think will entertain you guys, so…deh…it’s been working out pretty well so far so, I guess the only reasonable thing to do is continue with it, and yeah! Yeah. Yeah, let’s have some fun, sit back…ya know? Stay, subscribe…*chuckle*…I don’t know what to say…why…why is this even necessary? Uhmm…..guess that’s it? So…’kay, BYE!…*chuckles*.”

Then watching the video, and then read the passenger again. Do you see animation of all the things that he said automatically flow in your mind? This is how I said video email is a great big help 😀

EDIT

I don’t really understand this text much but I have a feel that it is about my topic. I like it when I read “We know that when the eye sees, all the consequent information is transmitted to the brain by means of electrical vibrations in the channel of the optic nerve.” This is indirectly support for my topic of video email over traditional email. Just like “Jala Farquhar” claimed in her post, people need to learn thing step by step, for me the step to learn how to write an email is over and we need to head up to the new step of video email, which is based on but more advanced than the previous one. If we keeps staying in one step, we miss the change to let the knowledge evolves like “Living the Dream 2014.” Video email helps people to record their experiences visually, which can become great references later. Video also works well since they have movement that makes it easier to be caught by the electrical vibrations in the channel of the optic nerve rather than just simply message. It can shorten the invisible distances between places and people; it actually saves time for the audiences to direct to the images that are processed through their optic nerve.

According to “Love to Think” man will collapse without structure, but structure is like a box and it can limit the creativity sense of man. Therefore, sometimes we have to tear down the old structure and come up with the new one that is more efficient and sufficient. Because we all want to have a best education system with all means; video email could be an excellent start in the long run of changing the old educational structure to the more technology based study in which will teach students more about time schedule and self-direct study, the structure that every graduate should have before stepping out to the real world.

Dreamers Unite

I am very honest in all mean, so I will write this post honestly. I don’t think that I learn a lot from this class so far. I don’t like writing, and now I have to write every day within limited time to 11:59pm. However, I admit that my critical thinking skills have improved a lot as I learn how to approach in different way depending on the assignments. I try to interpret it meaningful and thoughtful as much as I can, however, there are a lot of times that I get lost in reading others’ post and give common comments. I learned how to connect my primary text together with others’ pieces. It is very hard and sometimes I felt like it does not make a lot of sense to me. Plus, I don’t like doing blogs since I more consider blog as a tool to do homework rather than a page to associate and chat with my classmates. Personally, I like twitter more although I don’t use it much. I like to post some thoughtful videos up in twitter and hope someone will notice it. However, so far, there is none and it is pretty disappointed me.

About my inquiry topic, I pretty like the path I am heading to although it is pretty risky to me as I am in the middle of nowhere. I need a professional comment and give me advise on my topic. I hope that the professor will give me one soon enough for me to starting and finish my project on time within the topic of my interest. I like to work on this topic because VCU email is boring to most VCU students as some do not even bother to check theirs. However, to me, it is fascinating; likely I check my email hourly with the hope to read a new email. It is not like I am waiting for anything; I just like to receive email. It makes me feels like I was being surrounding by people who actually care for me somehow. In that sense, I want other people to have the same feeling with me by making newsletter update more interesting to them by video emails. It is very important to study this to make sure that students use the best approach to their professors for their questions or concern. Also, they need to get more involved in campus through newsletter updates. The mean of the university is to give the students the best way to convey their knowledge, thus, maintaining the relationship between students and professors electrically is necessary and needed for attention. Lastly, if it is frustrating to write a email, why don’t we try a new thing to address our ideas through video email? It is always worth to shoot a try, plus it will be fun since it is all about recording yourselves talking 😀

Extending My Dream

I have some tags like #educationcommunicationtools, #cooperation, #advanced communication, #professional approach, #studentengagement. However, I choose #educationcommunicationtools and #studentengagement over others because email is a very important communication tools within education as it allows teachers and students to exchange ideas, questions, and concerns outside the classroom. However, it still needs to be formal which is not so appropriate if we use video email. Therefore, there will be an argument rising up here; a tie needs to be resolved by researching. While, #studentengagement is about how students gets involved in campus and school through newsletter updates. It will explain how video emails get more students’ attention rather than boring emails. These two tags are mostly covered all of my concern about the topic, and it could ends up giving me a brand new question that could be served in a broader sense. What is the relationship between student engagement and education communication tools?

The Interpretation of Dreams

Accordance to the video and what I have experience myself so far, there is a pattern in writing email for everybody. First people consider the tone in their writing; second they reread their email to make sure words are appropriate and make sense but still have something that reflects their personalities. However, the process to do those two steps is bothersome. As in the video, Domics takes more than an hour to find a way to say greet his friend and tell her that he is free. He considers a lot in how to write it within an appropriate tone in which he neither sound hyper nor tired. He just wants to sound like himself; he also does not want his friend to feel boring reading his email. It is hard to find words that are right to his ideas. Thus, it soon becomes tiresome. There is so much things that we have to think to just answer a simple question. This is when video email comes in hand. With video email, you can easily address your message that can show people yourself and make them interest in what you try to say. It is very easy to say “hey, I am free, let’s do it” in video email rather than email. Also, with video email, ones can express themselves easily with full of face expression, hand motion and smiles. There is no need to imply any punctuation because people can see the tone right away. Unless you are trying to write a fake email with fake expression, video email is the better way to approach people with a friendly expression within simple talk.

Text My Dream

For years, schools have used email as the primary way to contact with students. However, writing an email to professors or teachers is pretty frustrated to students, some do not even know how to write or where to start the emails. It leads them to not communicate with the professors which may end up getting a bad grade or failing the class because of the lack of explanation. As you see the video, you will know, it is already hard to write an email to your friends, it is even take more time to write to your professors. You have to consider a lot in respect, tone, words, language, etc. Students can feel awkward and heavy for keep doing a same thing over and over again when you email their professors for questions. Thus, it will eventually prevent students to take action to their classes to get good grades. In spite of all trouble emails can create to students, after it is not that bad of a way, it is just troublesome. My way to approach this text is like suggestions. I am not trying to say whether it is bad or good, but I just explain how it going to be tiresome to a portion of students. Thus, from there, I can burst my idea of video email into the research. A friendly suggestion with analysis can set people up with competitive mind automatically. They will start comparing which one is better with more contribution to students’ engagement between two communication ways. I try to tell them that we are good with either way, but why don’t we try the new technology one to more advanced for the good of schools and students? I guess when I dig in deeper in the topic, there will be more information showing up and will do its jobs of convince people more.

Connection between Obvious Questions (Friday, 06/20/2014)

For my blog, I tried to find the significance of having a video email over the mail. I do not analyze whether it is good or bad, but to state that it could improve the relationship between students and professor by making them more engaging in newsletter updates. I want to have a deeper thought about how school use email as a traditional way to communicate with students vs. video email-a tradition and modern way for students to express themselves. I wonder whether VCU ever think about it, or because of the relationship between VCU and google, it is not making it happen since google has not invented any program like that yet. I want to research of how the significance of technology improves the quality of education and make student become more successful. Although I and my classmates both research about technology and its impact to society in many different paths, we both end up seeing the benefit of having technology for the modern world. I notice that Jala Farquhar has the same idea with me as we both look for the true meaning of technology, while my classmates Mirna Shaban, Summertime Sadness are more about finding whether it is good or bad.

My obvious question is “Will video email be a better way for staffs to engage with VCU students other than VCU email system?” I think I would change it into a statement instead of question “Video email opens the new era for school-students interaction system in the modern world.” I don’t want to do a research into a broader sense since social media is not my main focus. I focus on how school uses technology to engage with students better. I know that there are so many students who barely check their emails, because it is boring and tiresome. In this research, I am not seeking for a “yes, no” answer, but rather to find a way and show people its significance to put into the system. To be honest, I just have the idea but clueless. I do not really where and how to start the topic, but this is the only topic that I am interested so far. I am not that crazy about technology.

Analyzing My primary Text (Wednesday, 06/18/2014)

My primary text is about VCU email, so my question is “Will video email be a better way for staffs to engage with VCU students other than VCU email system?” In video email, I refer to some sort of video recording and message through digital devices and technology. Thus, the first thing I always do in research paper is to ask google for the definition. I want to have a certainty in my brain because I can spread the words down to people. Also, I assume that my audiences know nothing about my research, as I need to give them basic understand in order to follow up with my topic. I typed “video message for school” in google with the hope to catch some definition and information about how video email is good. However, I failed. Google did not give me any good websites relative to the topic. Thus, I changed my mind into the comparison between “video email” and “email” to aim for the overall look about these two types of digital communication. If I found some valuable information, it could be the meat for my body paragraph with the mean to show the benefit and efficiency of video email over email, especially among students. During googling in Google, I was led into the TEDTalk of Ken Robinson about “How Schools Kill Creativity” which sounds right to me. It could also be served as the reason why “video email” is better than email if I put it in the right paragraph. I decided to listen to TEDTalk, but too bad, it sounds boring and sleepy to me. After half hours of repeating googling the similar questions with no hope, I went to search in Youtube which is going to give me a “video explanation.” That video will eventually prove itself to people as it is not only working as a way to explain the problem to people, but also working as an evidence of how convenience and interactive video email comparing to email. Thus, there were so many thoughts appearing in my mind to make up a perfect imaginary research paper in which I use as the backbone to search information. One thought leads to another and all the sequences flow of interpreting knowledge about video email popping up. It is like a spider web which is spread broader in circles but always together ending up in one center mean. To be honest, I don’t know where this research is going to be, but so far I was unable to continue to find information for my question, I become bored and tired; I eventually gave up searching after roughly an hour.

Nugget about “Man-Computer Symbiosis” (Monday, 06/16/2014)

“It may be appropriate to acknowledge, at this point, that we are using the term “computer” to cover  a wide class of calculating, data-processing, and information-storage-and-retrieval machines. The capabilities of machines in this class are increasing almost daily. It is therefore hazardous to make general statements about capabilities of the class. Perhaps it is equally hazardous to make general statements about the capabilities of men. Nevertheless, certain genotypic differences in capability between men and computers do stand out, and they have a bearing on the nature of possible man-computer symbiosis and the potential value of achieving it.” (Man-Computer Symbiosis)

My nugget is about possible man-computer symbiosis. No matter how I think about this “possible project” it is very impossible and unbearable. It is not only inhumanity but also contributed in contaminating the order of the world whereas humans are reined over other species including “computer”- a never-extinct-artifact species. Through the passage, the author are putting human and the “class” in the same level in which I considered an extreme disrespectful act to human race. It is not only because the “class” is a handmade thing with no life, emotion and sympathy, it is also because “I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him” (John 13:16, NIV.) Since the computer is invented to serve people for a better life, it can never be compared with the human, regardless our disability. Computer is made to serve, not to be served. It is ok to use computer to support human’s needs in some special cases, but I can’t tolerate the idea of putting human race in the same level with computer. The question of “Who serves who?” should never ever be discussed in our society.

In this picture, Devon Carrow attends the school via robot because of his health condition. I have no objection with this at all, since when it comes to the end, the robot is used to serve this kid’s sincere want of going to school. Although the kids and teachers are acknowledged Devon via the robot, they deeply want and pray to the Lord that Devon will be there with them soon. This case is not a possible man-computer symbiosis; however the “Transcendence” case is it. The idea of letting Will live a human life through technology is inhumanity. There is no good to let one live half of his life. Although he is always with Everlyn, he cannot be next to her. It is painful. Plus, being aware that computer can calculate and predict thing much faster than the normal human, there is always the fear of dominance among human and man-computer symbiosis. Thus, it disturbs the world peace system and gives the “class” a chance to overpower his master, which is unnatural and unacceptable.

EDIT VERSION

My nugget is about possible man-computer symbiosis. No matter how I think about this “possible project” it is very impossible and unbearable. It is not only inhumanity but also contributed in contaminating the order of the world whereas humans are reined over other species including “computer”- a never-extinct-artifact species. Through the passage, the author are putting human and the “class” in the same level in which I considered an extreme disrespectful act to human race. It is not only because the “class” is a handmade thing with no life, emotion and sympathy, it is also because “I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him” (John 13:16, NIV.) The question of “Who serves who?” should never ever be discussed in our society.

This nugget connects with my first nuggets about “As We May Think” because it is all about “logic.” Is it logic when we wonder “Who serves who?” in this problem? It is illogical to think that way since the “class” is supposed to serve the people from the beginning. There should be not reverse in this case. However, as I considered last time, there is not absolutely right or wrong about logic because of different perception. However, is it odd when someone admits that the “class” was invented to be served by people? Thus, this is when the problem of relativism and ethics come up. Logic must be ethical relativism in which things are different in interpretation but still have to follow the basic ethics standards that apply to people for the goods of the society. Since it is unethical to reverse the order of the world and go against the principles of which the objects were made, we are saying that the “logic” idea of man serves “class” is wrong under any consideration.
