This website has an interactive map of the United States during the Civil War. The map highlights several wars that took place during the Civil War. Virginia can be highlighted on this website. When you click on Virginia it shows all the battles that were fought during the war. It tells the student the date of the battle, who won, and a brief description.
This website could not be determined in the Fry Readability model. There were too many long names and places.
Use in Class
I would use this website after we have learned about all the major battles. This will be done in small groups. I will have students in groups of two or three. Each set of students will receive a computer or ipad for the activity. They will have to click on the map and identify all the major battles. I will print out a similar map for the students to write on. When they are filling out their map, they will use blue or red pens. The Blue pens will represent the Union and the Red pens will represent the Confederate. Using the map, they will label the correct wins based on the interactive website. This is engaging because it gives the students an opportunity to use a website to help enhance their learning. The website will help the students understand the standard, VS.7 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the issues that divided our nation and led to the Civil War by describing Virginia’s role in the war, including identifying major battles that took place in Virginia, better. This will be used in the Reflection phase of PAR.
