I find it interesting that Milton’s invocation of Urania clashes with the classical allusion of Christian belief. She is likened to the holy spirit. By doing this, he conveyed that previous religious beliefs of the  Greeks and Romans were wrong. I understand his reasoning for this, however, I find it interesting that he chooses this moment to depart from the bible because I believe this complicates his idea that God and the son are one being.

  1. That’s exactly what I thought during class. The whole focus on the story of Adam and Eve isn’t necessarily Christian the way I grew up learning about it and so it is interesting how Milton not only includes a christian filter on the story of Adam and Eve, but also plays with the language of even older religious subtexts.
