“Somewhere over the Rainbow”

The title of this blog may give away what this blog will be about. The famous song, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” has been a well-known song that is most commonly seen in the movie “Wizard of Oz.” The beauty about this song is that there is symbolism behind it. The person who created the song had several significances behind the song. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole is the man who created the beautiful song. He is more commonly known as Iz or Bruddah Iz (Jackson 1). He is the all-time best-selling record by a Hawaiian artist. “Rainbow/Wonderful World” was used in a national TV commercial for eToys. It was also part of an episode of the hit TV series ER and in the soundtrack for the romantic comedy movie 50 First Dates (2004) (Jackson 2).  Iz was able to put a lot of symbolism into his record album which debuted the song. In the song, we see lyrics such as:

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky

Are also on the faces of people passing by”

Here we can see that the rainbow does not only symbolize a pretty aspect of nature, but also the smiles on people. The rainbow is more than just an array of color. The rainbow many times acts as a symbol, depending on the situation it is used in. In the future of my blogs, I will uncover how the rainbow has changed over time in history. Also, I will give several examples on how it is used in pop culture and also in different topics not covered as often as others.
