Police Reform Presentation – About Reigan Wright

Attached is a presentation Reigan participated in that involved research on the importance of police reform. Reigan used her interdisciplinary studies to research the communication among police departments and the public.

Why Interdisciplinary?

My name is Reigan Wright and I am a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University with an interdisciplinary study in Writing in Communcations. I chose interdisplinary after first majoring in Public Relations and found myself lost where I was going with this degree. After discussing my concerns with my advisor, she informed me there was a way to broaden my study in interdisciplinary. I did not have to force myself to stay in one area. I was able to continue my focus in communciations but also expand my skills in writing. I am also able to broaden my search in the field of communications. I chose interdisciplinary in Writing in Communications because the majority of the classes I had already taken involved both of those studies. I also chose Writing in Communications because I have plans to work in an area that involves communicating with the public, but also allows me to write more so than I would have to speak with the public.

Both writing and communications intersect by communicating with the public through writing. Communication does not always involve public speaking and I can show that in my skills in writing. I can also use my skills in communication to engage with the public and inform the public through writing on current matters. Communications and writing also intersect by not just communicating verbally, but through social media pages as well.

Interdisciplinary is the integration of two or more studies to solve one problem. The value is not being stuck in one area to solve a problem and being able to think more critically into the issue.

Writing in Communications is an interdisciplinary I chose to accurately communicate with the public through speaking and writing. I would like to conduct research on my own on certain matters and create engaging and accurate articles to spread among the public to ensure no one is misinformed.

My interdisciplinary will remind students that we are not forced to focus on one skill. Writing and Communications does not leave a student in one area to practice writing or communicating, but bringing both skills combined to communicate with the public through writing. Writing does not just involve creating stories, but accurately informing the public on important matters. Communication does not only involve speaking to one another, but can be done through other forms such as writing or posting on social media.
