Their armed forces have Colombia divided into seven zones, each with a high command of at least twenty-five officers (political) who are responsible for strategies of policy making.
There is also a Secretariat in charge of military operations who along with the high command appoint the leader of a Bloc which consists of five or more “Fronts” of roughly 200 rebels each. Some have as little as forty fighters but others nearly 400. There is also a central command including a commander in chief. Commands from the Central Command trickle down to the zones and then to the blocs.

The radical group was founded by Luis Alberto Morantes Jaimes (Jacobo Arenas) and Pedro Antonio Marin (Manuel Marulanda Velez), but the current leader is Rodrigo Londoño Echeverri, also known under the alias Timoleón Jiménez or Timochenko/Timochenco.
