Creating Good Study Habits

Studying is devoting time and attention to gain knowledge on a specific subject. Although it may seem like a relatively easy thing to do, I find that the older I get, the less motivation I have to do it. There’s a different between stress-studying and studying out of habit. I believe that on average, stress-studying is the kind of studying that most college students tend to do. Pulling an all-nighter, the night before a big test or quiz seems to be the go-to move for most students. This is a very bad study habit to create, although if you ask some people they’ll tell you that it works for them.

I don’t disagree that it might work for some people, however there are other methods of studying that have proven to be more effective. My personal experience with studying is to think of it as homework. This might not work for everyone because some people don’t mind not doing their homework. My advice to people that do, is to make it a part of your homework schedule. If you think of studying as homework or something that you have to turn in the next day you will be more likely to get it done. So, changing your mentality about studying would be the first step.

Location plays a very important part in studying. I personally study and do homework better when I’m not around a lot of people because I tend to get distracted. For example, doing homework in the middle of the commons wouldn’t be productive for me; but if I moved down to the underground, then I’ll be able to get my work done and focus. If studying around a lot of people doesn’t bother you then that’s great, but other distractions like television, music, and your phones can defeat the purpose of studying. The ultimate purpose of studying as stated earlier is to gain knowledge. So, allowing yourself to be distracted by other things can ultimately hinder you from learning the information needed for tests and exams.

My last piece of advice would be to study every day. Even though it sounds like a lot to do it will prove to be helpful. Even if it’s just for ten minutes after class while the information is fresh in your brain, it is better than waiting until the last minute, and then trying to cram all the information in your head then night before. Create good study habits now so that the rest of your college life will be easier.

Examining Writing

“I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.” I found this quote by Joan Didion very interesting because the one thing that I feel that writing is used for, isn’t the reason why she writes. Well at least it isn’t the reason she stated in this quote. Writing to me is one of the most effective ways to tell a story. Telling stories is one of the most effective ways to persuade, inform, and entertain readers which are all writer’s main goals.

I guess it all depends on what you mean by writing. The way she describes writing seems more like a diary or a journal that she keeps to herself. That kind of writing is more of what you’re thinking, things you may want, what you see, and trying to figure out what it means. The way I see writing is storytelling because my mind went straight to authors and how they write books, fiction or real to tell stories and entertain readers. However, writers can be anyone and for any purpose. I said in class recently, “I’m not a writer but…” and my professor said well why do you say that? You write for this class and most likely some others. Texting is also a form of writing.

I found a quote a while back to help me with my writing and I’d like to share them with you here. A lot of times when I have to write for an assignment, I never know where or how to start. “You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.”-Jodi Picoult. This quote is very true, and it helped me a lot when writing because I seem to forget that I can revise as I go along or once I’m finished writing. Instead, I get fixated on trying to make it perfect from the start and that’s just unrealistic. Even the greatest writers have to revise their writing several times before they submit or publish their work. It is an essential part of the writing process and works to achieve the goals to persuade, inform, and entertain readers. I say all this to say that when you expand your mind to different forms of writing, I guess we are all writers in some way and not in the “author way” as my mind first thought of.

Reflection to “The City & the City”


Reading the title of the novel wouldn’t have led me to believe that the story was about a murder. Seeing how the mystery of the murder evolves into a tale about two cities was very interesting but at the same time very strange. Mièville portrays the two cities as two separate entities, both with its own traditions, government, and language. These two cities set the scene for the murder and make it even more mysterious. I did find the book hard to follow and a little confusing. I found it confusing that there wasn’t a clear motive for the murder although it was the most talked about situation in the novel.

The author talks about a crime that seems to be worse than murder which is referred to as “breaching”. The people of the two cities, Ul Qoma and Besźel were taught to distinguish between the things that were of the opposing city without seeing them because if you don’t, even if it’s by an accident, it’s called ‘breaching.” Another confusing thing about the novel is that it doesn’t explain how this breaching thing came about or why. However, it is said that when a breach does happen, members of the Breach organization take them away and the breachers are never seen again.  Although breaching is taken very seriously, there seems to be some leniency towards children and people that are just visiting the cities.

The cities have different areas located within them. Total areas which is one full area, alter areas which are parts of the city that everyone ignores and basically avoids, and crosshatched areas which is somewhere in between the other two areas. There seems to be a certain diligence that everyone has for navigating through these cities. Everyone does their part but to a certain extent. For example, the police try to cooperate with the police in the other city but aren’t allowed to do their own investigations on the bad things that may go on in the other cities. I think that one of the main questions that this book raised for me is why does the breaching rules have to be so enforced and strict? The only issue that I can think of that it’s trying to address, is how we tend to “unsee” things that are going on in our own lives. It may not be happening in our city per se, and since it isn’t we don’t do or care anything about it. I don’t know if that was one of his points in writing this book but that’s the only thing I came up with while reading.
