Discrepant events are scientific demonstrations that are used to engage young learners through the presentation of unexpected outcomes. This Static Electricity discrepant event was demonstrated in my fourth grade Practicum B experience during the Science block. The above link includes a handout for the teacher about how to conduct the demonstration, including needed materials, detailed steps, and safety considerations. The student handouts provide students with the opportunity to make a prediction about what will occur, as well as write about what actually occurred during the demonstration. For this demonstration, the students were able to understand that both a balloon and a comb could pick up, or attract, the positively-charged pieces of tissue paper because both items become negatively-charged when rubbed against someone’s hair to create static electricity.
