Learning Objectives:

  • To reflect on the relationship of the arts in supporting learning throughout the classroom environment.
  • To develop instructional activities and supporting materials for including the arts in primary curriculum.
  • To identify ways in which the arts can be used to support the VA Standards of Learning for children in the K-5 classrooms.

Activity:

  • Theatrical Performance/Digital Video

Homework:

  • Read Chapter 3 – Due 2/12/18 by midnight
  • Art/Making Activity – Due 2/13/18 by class time
    • The video you create of your theatrical performance should be posted as well as its connection to the specific SOL.

  • Daily art posts (minimum 3) – Due 2/13/18 by midnight

    • tag posts with any of the Virginia SOLs that inspired the art (ie. “science3.8”), and any other tags you think are useful
  • Weekly blog post – Due 2/12/18 by midnight
    • In this week’s reading, the author starts the chapter by listing her top ten education related wishes for children (wonder, desire, passion, risk taking, confidence, complexity, engagement, practicality, ownership, empathy).  Which out of the top ten do you feel is the most important for producing positive learning outcomes?  Why?  How could you incorporate the author’s list into an appropriate activity for K-5 students?

  • Respond to 2 classmates’ posts – Due 2/14 by class time
    • Respond to two of your classmates’ posts.  In your response, choose a different attribute from the author’s top ten list and explain to your classmates how they might include it alongside what they have already written.  Try to include a personal experience which highlights the effectiveness of whatever attribute you choose.
