Learning Objectives:

  • To reflect on the relationship of the arts in supporting learning throughout the classroom environment.
  • To identify ways in which the arts can be used to support the VA Standards of Learning for children in the K-5 classrooms.

Class Discussion:

  • We will not be having our regular face to face class meeting this week. Please complete all assignments below by the due dates.  I think the movie assignment gives us the opportunity to think about the multi-cultural aspect, mentioned often in our text, of integrating art into the curriculum.

Activity:

  • Fear and Learning at Hoover Elementary
  • Watch Fear and Learning at Hoover Elementary – Due 3/26
  • Write a blog post responding to the following questions: – Due 3/26
    1.  How did this documentary make you feel?
    2.  How will you reach all of your students?  Do you think art integration can play a role in bridging different socio-economic divides in the classroom?
    3.  Was there anything shocking about this documentary to you?
    4.  Find a multimedia item/image which relates to the content of the film, or the experiences of the students of the film to share and post on your blog after you answer the previous questions.
    5.  After you have posted your multimedia item/image, reflect on why you chose that image to share, and why it furthers the conversation of immigration in America.

    • In this week’s reading, the author focuses on math and integrating art into math instruction. She gives several great examples of using music , visual arts, and literature to teach mathematical concepts. Choose one piece of art (song, book, painting, photograph, etc.) and describe how this could used to teach a mathematical concept. Try to include a picture of the art, or a link to the song, photograph, etc. to support your post..
