Diversity Committee Meeting Agenda

In attendance: Jen, Nao, Beth, Jared, Bryce, Fantasy, LaToya

New Business

  1. New Member LaToya Davis! Welcome!
  2. We are starting to receive names for the new faculty representatives for the committee that will start in Fall 2019
    1. Nominations for graduate students – we need to start with working Corey in April to solicit nominations – choose students by May
      1. Our current students can be nominated and voted back in but they cannot just decide to stay on the committee
    2. We brought up the idea of whether there should be an undergraduate representative.
      1. We should be be considering the undergraduate classroom experience
      2. Faculty are interested in knowing the resources for improving the classroom and undergraduate teaching
      3. Bring in a resource to faculty meeting
  3. Discussion of faculty evaluations on diversity
    1. Fantasy and Mike will have a meeting this month — asking about an overall qualitative categorization of people’s activities discussed in narratives
    2. Can the committee come to a faculty meeting to talk about the diversity narratives in the annual evaluations and how the personnel committee view these statements
  4. Committee Updates:
    1. Speaker Sub-Committee
      1. Dr. Kington – Updates? When do we need to jump in?
        1. Dr. Kington has not come
      2. Tom Eisenberg is still willing to pay for a speaker — we are thinking of who we could invite – we would like to do a big speaker in the Fall
      3. Spring Speaker
        1. Nao will follow up with a list of more local speakers that we discussed
        2. April 22nd, 23rd or 24th
        3. We will provide refreshments for the speaker
      4. Ableism Documentary – March 25th at 10 am – Brief documentary (10 minutes) with possible facilitator — contact someone from SAEO about facilitator and additional documentary
    2. Social Engagement Sub-Committee
      1. Coffee Hour with the Diversity Committee? How did it go? (Jeremy)
        1. Great turn out! Around 30 people showed! No overlap between the faculty and students (faculty showed up for the first hour and students came for the second hour). The dynamic did not lend itself to talking about issues about diversity, equity, and inclusion.
          1. Follow up with Mike in thinking about how the department can meet the apparent needs of the department for more social activities and opportunities for the department.
        2. What type of experiential activities that we can do in these “social spaces” that will help us to meet the goals of community building and also some teaching about issues of equity, diversity, inclusion
      2. GAME TIME for Psych Dept., this Friday, March 15 – Stephanie did this email go out? 3 pm – 5 pm – Aspire 1004 (?)
    3. Ram Pages Update – When will this go live?
