Commonwealth Poll

We are proud to have the Wilder School’s Commonwealth Poll selected as a Presidential Election Poll by CNN Politics for the first time in VCU’s history. Selection as a CNN-approved poll solidifies the Commonwealth Poll among the top polling operations in the nation while elevating the voice of Virginians.

Recent highlights

Our most recent poll was conducted from October 9-21, 2021, with results released in October 2021. The poll asked Virginians for their perspectives on:

  • Voting intentions
  • Preference for control of the House of Delegates
  • Top issues considered when voting
  • Approval of Governor Northam
  • Views about the direction of the commonwealth
  • Views about the direction of the country

“The poll reflects a tightening of the race for the three top offices. The number of voters unhappy with either candidate for governor and the decrease in Northam’s approval rating is noteworthy,” said 66th Governor of Virginia L. Douglas Wilder.

The poll’s methodology is as follows:

  • 808 adult Virginians surveyed
  • Phone survey (Landlines/Cell) – dual sample design on listed landline numbers and random digit dialed (RDD) cell phone numbers
  • Sample weighted by demographics: gender, age, education, race, Hispanic origin, and region
  • Overall margin of error: +/- 5.86 percentage points
