We are proud to have the Wilder School’s Commonwealth Poll selected as a Presidential Election Poll by CNN Politics for the first time in VCU’s history. Selection as a CNN-approved poll solidifies the Commonwealth Poll among the top polling operations in the nation while elevating the voice of Virginians.

Recent highlights

Our most recent poll was conducted from June 30 – July 9, 2022 , with results released in July 2022. The poll asked Virginians for their perspectives on:

  • Approval of Governor Youngkin
  • Approval of President Biden
  • Governor Youngkin’s economic policies
  • Abortion laws
  • How the U.S. has handled the invasion of Ukraine
  • Addressing gun violence and mass shootings

“The issues — the pandemic, increasing cost of living, gasoline prices and pervasive crime — are best measured by the most affected areas: the people,” said L. Douglas Wilder, who served as the 66th governor of Virginia. “The lack of support for this administration demonstrates that they are missing the mark.”

The poll’s methodology is as follows:

  • 813 adult Virginians surveyed
  • Phone survey (Landlines/Cell) – dual sample design on listed landline numbers and random digit dialed (RDD) cell phone numbers
  • Sample weighted by demographics: gender, age, education, race, Hispanic origin, and region
  • Overall margin of error: +/- 5.81 percentage points
